How many people were on this train?

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

Apparently this math question is giving people on Twitter a hard time:

65 people were on the train...

if theres 63 on now, take away the 17 that just got on meaning there was 46 people on the train after the 19 people got off, add the 19 back on the train before the 17 got on and you would have 65 people

65 people on the train
19 get off
46 People now on the train
17 get on
63 people now on the train

have i missed something or.... that wasnt hard at all??

Why calculate sequential? always make each step as simple as possible. Doesn't make much difference in such a simple case but really helps you once it gets more complex.
Station diff: 17 - 19 = -2
So state before station 63 + 2 = 65

I'm pretty sure the correct answer is 61. Jeez

Maybe 46 or 66. I don't know. I wish there was an app that did simple math calculations for you.

x-19 people get off + 17 people get on=63
x+17 = 63+19
x = 63+19-17
x=65

65 people on the train, 19 get off, 17 get on, train now has 63.

Given the level this is set at I think this was what they were looking for when they ask to see how you arrived at the enswer.
