At the risk of triggering a religious flamewar...

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

Seriously, thanks for your part in guiding that.
"everything I do I do for myself, to make myself happy , if it makes me happy to help people then i help people, never once has it made me happy not help someone and never has it made me happy to hurt someone, although it did feel good at the time and some people just deserve to be hurt.
I posted earlier that the selfish reason for me to be here is that teaching people who want to learn (as opposed to the increasingly indulged generations in Australia) makes me feel good. I wasn't kidding.
I don't know any of you guys but wouldn't mind meeting and drinking with you, so introduce yourselves when the opportunity arises.
Happily.

It might not change his opinion, but will at least let him (and everyone else) know what exactly you're doing here.

How secular is this school you'll be teaching at, and how secular will your lessons be?

I thought most of the above questions are good and worthy of a response.

Also, what kind of missionary activities do you plan on doing here? If they have been mentioned, sorry for asking again, but I missed it if so.

Risk, this whole thing will continue to descend to a personal level and damage the spirit of CEO, pushing it back to the old forum days.

Hey Ho!
LoL, great play-by-play! !

Personally, I think this is an interesting discussion. I usually don't get to hear much from any missionaries, so cool to hear this stuff. Also, I think everyone is making some good points.

I even like Dagenham's questions now, and it's a lot easier to see where he's coming from with his line of reasoning when he's not so lit up about it.

Oh, and I guess it's time to move this to the Arena. As you said, it's becoming more of a personal conversation now, which is fine, but I'm guessing most that look in the General Chatter would skip over it.

Don't worry folks, I'll leave a shadow.

Hey Ho!
Not just he "debate thing" mate. I choose my topics carefully and debate only those rigorously. Mindless Muslim bashing (or bigotry of any kind) rates pretty high on my list of topics I am happy to sink my teeth into.

Cheers,

RD

Not sure if you're referring to the church-related free English classes mentioned previously (they just teach English) or my future plans for teaching. I intend to take on paid teaching or program/academic management for 1-2 days a week to supplement paying the bills with whoever pays well, and will teach their secular curriculum. For the rest of the week I intend to either start my own free secular classes, possibly in Steung Meanchey, or volunteer with an organisation that's already doing the same thing. We're currently scoping out what free programs are already offered so we don't waste effort reinventing the same wheel.
Also, what kind of missionary activities do you plan on doing here?
Well I'm going to keep trying to convert you, for one thing. I hate gin and tonic, I only drink it to win your confidence. I jest, I jest! I love gin and tonic.

Seriously, I believe that 'sharing the gospel' is not a theatre sport, it's something you do with people you already have real, meaningful, established relationships with. If those people are curious, they'll ask. If religion comes up, speak your piece and then hold your peace.

Okay. I know you get that I'm not looking for your endorsement, but I appreciate that you're offering an olive branch, RD.
Great. Thanks for answering. As far as I am concerned the questions have now been answered. The arrangement seems unusual, but my own inclination is to take people at face value unless I have specific reasons to believe otherwise. As far as I am concerned this part of the discussion is over unless you have anything else you want to add.

The really unfortunate part of this whole thing is your attack on Muslims. Not only is it ill tempered, but it also is suggestive of so many parts of the Ugly side of Christian Evangelism --- bad mouthing other faiths, taking a brand preference approach to God, being intolerant of other beliefs in general, and relying on crude propaganda rather than genuine curiosity to form and aggressively promote their opinions.

Obviously you are extremely angry at me personally for calling you on this; so maybe the views of others will help you reflect a bit on why your words have been perceived as they have been.

The feedback I have gotten via PM from others not necessarily involved in this debate has been quite supportive and I feel quite confident I have not unfairly attacked you.

For now, I think that all that needs to be said has been said.

You do have some fairly serious misconceptions about Islam, so if you are ever interested in a friendly discussion on any of these topics let me know. If I can make a heart or two somewhat more open and tolerant, I will have been able to put some of my knowledge and experience to good use.
