The burden of diarrhoea in south Asia

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

The burden of diarrhoea in south Asia

Post by Kung-fu Hillbilly »

Recently in Sumatra I was repeatedly infected with giardiasis, it being the worst case of infection I've had in nearly three decades of living and traveling within the region. I was infected several times in Bukit Lawang from different warungs (local eateries) resulting in weight loss, fatigue and a constant metallic taste in the mouth from continuously pumping loads of antibiotics into the system. I'd recover from one infection to be struck down almost immediately by another leading me to believe Bukit Lawang to be one of the most unhygienic places I've come across as far as food preparation is concerned.

Amusing that a 500KHR pill known as Tinidazole taken between 500mg and 2000mg will fix you in 24 hours, and yet people languish with the issues for days or weeks. Keep this in your backpack at all times, it will literally save your ass.

The issue was the constant reinfection, not the cure.

As a community service I'd also like to offer the Bristol Stool chart. Type 3-4 are considered ideal.

You're welcome.

With people from civilized societies, the focus is on providing good food and good service. This results in the restaurant having a good reputation, and a lot of repeat business. These restaurants normally have a lot of customers.

In the poor Asian countries, people often sell food which they would not eat themselves. Cambodian people will even tell you this. It is just another way of scamming people. When they have your money, and you are sick, they think they are clever. They just think about getting money today. They dont think about repeat business.

If a person in a poor Asian country would open a restaurant, and focus on providing the best food they can, they would have a very successful business, and make a lot of money. Why dont they think about repeat business, instead of just getting your money today?

Forget the poor Asian country explanation. Some cultures have this idea of scamming, others do not.

Poor does not equate with scamming, nor does rich equate with not scamming.

However the locals might have the idea of short term gain (and the low value of life) more
ingrained in them after surviving the hell known as the Khmer Rouge.

Better to scam to the fullest now if there might not be a tomorrow to benefit from.
