That one anomaly... And why is it so?

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

That one anomaly... And why is it so?

Post by IraHayes »

A funny chain of events happened to day culminated in some serious thought and this thread.
In brief...
I uploaded some audio to YouTube that will form a listening exercise for my students.
I don't, as a rule, browse YT that much and just use it as a handy repository for videos of audio files as YT vids can be embedded in Google Forms(quizzes etc)
While I was clicking through I saw a an old VH-1 top 100 all time songs vid and it was the top 20 of the 100 list.
Then while having a cup of tea I got talking with my mother about how The Beatles had so many songs in the the list from VH-1 and how they are considered to be the greatest band of all time. And yet they never feature in any of my play lists.. My top 5.. my top 10 .. nothing, zero! Probably 1 or 2 in my top 30 if I thought about it a bit. As it turns out she was never a big Beatle fan back in the day, either.
I then mentioned a movie I saw a few years ago, called "Yesterday". And I told her she should watch it as it was the sort of movie I thought she would enjoy.
I've watched the movie a couple of times before and this evening I dug it up from my portable drive and watched it again. And it was just as good... just a funny and just as gripping.

Now to the reason I wrote this post.

Why though? Why is it such a good movie (to me). I never watch this type of movie ... ever! The Beatles music is well known by me but nothing they produced ever reaches my fav lists.
I prefer sci-fi, action, and fantasy (No Harry Potter though.. god help me none of that). A few westerns and Clint Eastwood movies, casablanca for good measure but no comedies and most certainly no romantic type movies at all. Historical stuff like Sharpe's Rifles I would list under action but no historical costume dramas.

SO WHY! why do I like The movie "Yesterday"?? The music while being well known could be one answer... the premise for the movie could possible fall under "sci-fi" .. but it's hardly covered in the movie, other than to set the stage for the main part.
It has gotten me thinking of predictability / conformity of choices (given any one persons personal preferences) and I may have to do some reading up to see if there is such a thing as non-conformity choices people make and why they make them.
So, is there any one thing that you like or do that is unusual for your personal set of preferences?
Something that might make a close friend, someone who would know you very well, say "I wouldn't have thought you'd like that."

Just curious.

I'm really into Fleetwood Mac, does that count? My liking them so much has drawn surprised looks from friends but enough time in Asia and I am way into Journey now too. Nobody knows or cares in Asia that I'm not cool.

Oh yeah, I hold the strong belief that Sir Paul McCartney's career after the Beatles is extraordinary, he has not lost a microgram of magic and his touring band kills it too. I will entertain no one who disputes me.
