Re: Sunday: Are we so anti-Christian we're turning pro-Islam
i think they are, mostly, unstable mentally... some are just sociopathic, meaning nothing will deter them, and there's not much to be done about them. but those that are mentally ill in other ways, there's a strong chance that religion could actually lock into them MUCH harder than a sane person. generally does if they're heavily exposed to it. they blame the voices/dark moods/etc on demons, and are afraid to die and meet them instead of eager to die and escape them. that's obviously never going to be 100%... as some will get other weird notions in their head like they're doing gods work/etc... but we approach the main group as best we can.Hotdigr wrote:So if I may paraphrase you DO ( that's code again mate!) you are talking about people that have a conscience. Unfortunately, many don't and that imo is why religion was invented. Not that it has really worked in the way it was supposed to mind you, I honestly don't think people like ....( fill in your blanks) really gave a shit about punishment in the afterlife unfortunately.
there is absolutely a correlation line in the deviation between religious belief (not just church attendance, but real belief) and increased mass killings... the question is whether or not it's a result of causation.

OD, first - thanks so much for not using capitals (that is such an intellectually lazy and rude habit - very condescending to the reader, mate)...OrangeDragon wrote:mostly ignoring your complete lack of humanism in your claim that humanism is the solution... tell me please, what part of taught humanism will prevent someone from going on a mass killing spree and then using suicide as an out to avoid any kind of punishment? belief in themselves as a human will have, by that point, become meaningless... while belief in some skyman waiting to toss them into a pool of fire when little red men poke them up the ass with spears for the rest of eternity might make them hesitate a little longer.dagenham wrote:
Fuck you and your "soul saving" efforts. Humanism, when applied, is every bit as effective in promoting anf practicing empathy as your "threat of damnation" spiel that you lay on potential converts. Always that imposing background threat.
Any mass murderer is mentally ill. Period. Religion can play a part or not - it's irrelevant. The issues are complex and multi-layered, but not necessarily based on belief systems.
I am a textbook loving, caring, sharing Humanist. I just hate all fuckin' Missionaries. Because they are evil arrogant manipulative scum. Obviously.

Nonsense, you're an extremely self centered and judgemental individual, based at least on about 95% of your posting here. I'm sure I'm not the only one to see it. You don't at all, EVER (and yes, that was yelled), consider other people's feelings on a subject, only their views... which you then try and "correct" to your views without any consideration of the background to them. You make massive presumptions about people based on limited input; as i'm doing here, admittedly, which is why i added the "based on your posting here" clause... to give you the benefit of the doubt that you're not always like this, a benefit you never seem to give others while posting.dagenham wrote:OD, first - thanks so much for not using capitals (that is such an intellectually lazy and rude habit - very condescending to the reader, mate)...OrangeDragon wrote:mostly ignoring your complete lack of humanism in your claim that humanism is the solution... tell me please, what part of taught humanism will prevent someone from going on a mass killing spree and then using suicide as an out to avoid any kind of punishment? belief in themselves as a human will have, by that point, become meaningless... while belief in some skyman waiting to toss them into a pool of fire when little red men poke them up the ass with spears for the rest of eternity might make them hesitate a little longer.dagenham wrote:

The Christians really showed compassion and morality when it came to the indigenous peoples in America, OD.
I hope you haven't forgotten that.
I'm not necessarily on dagenham's side, I just really dislike organised religion, it is a blight on the world, imo.

Absolutely not, but it's also a much different organisms now than it was then. And I think it's asinine to blame it's current incarnation for things done so long ago. It's like still blaming all germans for the nazis.vladimir wrote:The Christians really showed compassion and morality when it came to the indigenous peoples in America, OD.

I don't know about the US (mostly founded by religious extremists), but the organised churches did a lot for the native people in Australia and India during colonial times.

Australia's chief demographer claims (no citation, it's late) - along with others in academia - that what we term as GensY/Z are the first generations to be born with an absence of empathy - that is, many of these would step over a fellow human dying in the street with no psychological toll. Obviously empathy is party of social conditioning - and I often wonder whether this has a direct correlation to society's growing absence of faith in a deity, which psychiatry usually argues is part of the normal human condition.
Your way aint the only way, brother...in fact, it's the wrong way if you obviously have to threaten people into believe in your shite program...
Go home, asshole...and try converting educated urban Aussies who will inevitably slam the door in your face...and that's the real reason why you're here - massively unlevel "spiritual" playing field with you and your resources and trinkets....and then you, you of all people, criticize NGOs?

And would you believe that neither of them had white skin or spoke English? Sacrilege!vladimir wrote:I find it amusing that Christians, especially in the NATO fold, laugh at ragheads, but Jesus and Abraham were also ragheads.
