7 Reasons Not to Move to Thailand
Re: 7 Reasons Not to Move to Thailand
To be fair to explorer, his posts are just as factual as the majority of the posts on CEO, it's just that certain members do not like him.
Explorer, perhaps you should invite all of your opponents for a happy hour and treat them to a round of drinks. After a few hours they may get to like you.

When people attack others, it is not about the person they are attacking, it is about themselves. They think attacking others makes them more important.
Most newcomers get attacked on this forum. It is about the top dogs, or would be top dogs, maintaining their dominant status. I believe, if all personal attacks were deleted, a lot more people would participate in this forum.
When I talk about people, it is to illustrate a point. I do not include information which would identify them.
I spend little time in PP and other tourist areas. I have never met most people on this forum. I met one. I know who he is, as he discussed the same things in real life as he discussed on this forum, but he does not know who I am. I could live a double life and be his friend in real life, but I have no desire to. His attitude on this forum tells me he is a person to avoid in real life.
When you spend a lot of time with Cambodian people, you get to understand what really goes on. I am amazed how little some people understand. Some of the more extreme things I dont even discuss, as some people dont believe the trivial things. But then I get attacked for saying things like this. They think I am trying to act better than them. Anybody can go and spend time with the people and go through this learning experience.
If you are good to Cambodian people, you can form some genuine friendships, people who will value you for the rest of their lives.
By the way, there are some good people on this forum who I would like to meet in real life, if I ever have the opportunity.

Re: 7 Reasons Not to Move to Thailand
Interesting few comments and reactions here.
Early in my posting, I supported explorer over a post as he had not insulted anyone and had quiet a few derogatory remarks made against him.
I received several negative comments from the same people just for supporting him.
I do not know explorer, have never met him and have no idea of what type of person he is. He may have made some bad posts in the past, I don't know.
Obviously it was a concerted attack on him by a few individuals who consider this forum their own preserve and as he said, doing this makes them feel important.
I have noticed that there have been several new members who were attacked by these individuals over completely innocent posts and have never returned.
Gonk, you should be concerned about this.

The forum moderators should wake up to what is happening, and reign it in.

Re: 7 Reasons Not to Move to Thailand
The forum moderators have rather more, experience as to what goes on, than you. They do an excellent job of keeping things flowing smoothly. I've seen posters on more than one occasion explain to you why you frequently get a negative reaction, but you never seem to take the reason onboard. One that sticks out is your constantly referencing how much time you spend with Cambodians, as if this somehow proves your superiority. You don't seem to realize that many others on the board have just as much interaction with the locals, and quite a few, such as taabarang, much more. Even a stupid Irish geriatric like me has clocked up nearly 10 years living in my wife's village, surrounded by khmers 24/7. I don't consider this to make my opinion anymore valid, as I still have lots to learn about the people and the culture.

Oh well, lets see me attacked for my point of view.takeoman wrote: ↑Thu Dec 20, 2018 7:47 pmThe forum moderators have rather more, experience as to what goes on, than you. This is a forum. Everyone is entitled to a point of view or to post articles. What is not considered etiquette on just about every other forum is trying to force members to accept your point of view.
Reading back, I see that it is just a few members that constantly harang explorer. It's almost like a game to them. Looking at your own post (takeoman), your attitude is that you know far more than explorer and that he should follow your way of thinking. I am sure you mean well but it does not come across like that.
I know very little of town or village life in Cambodia having spent in total only a year or so there but I enjoy reading posts from all sides and all opinions as in the very near future, I wil lbe living there.
What I do not like is reading posts that contribute nothing except to try and drive members away and leave the forum with "like minded" people.
Explorer may not be "one of the boys" but he is a member and entitled to post what he thinks. How about backing off a bit and letting the rest of us enjoy posts from all points of view rather than running members down.

Re: 7 Reasons Not to Move to Thailand
Wow, go to have a pint, return and find it kicking off.
I can't say I would agree with explorers posts but he does not offend anyone, has not singled anyone out for attack and generally just posts what he feels.
Sorry, what's wrong with that. So some members may not agree with him, some may just have fun by ganging up on him. Come on Dan, isn't everyone entitled to an opinion? You know full well that several new members have been driven off by the "cabal" as someone put it.
I have had my fare share of abuse because I was new and the "cabal" did not agree with me but after a prolonged rest came back. Not like many others who simply gave up and went away.
If this is to be a private forum with a limited point of view then so be it. Surely all sides are entitled to an opinion and not be attacked because it does not measure up to others points of view.
AB, well said and good luck to you as you get rounded on by the "cabal".

Re: 7 Reasons Not to Move to Thailand
Are you still smarting over Bingham snapping at you, he does it to everyone, and has been doing for more years than anyone can remember. As for explorer,I'll treat him the same way I treat everyone else. Regarding not being one of the boys, apart from Jamie I have never met anyone who posts here so I doubt I qualify for that club anymore than he does. To sum up indeed he is free to post whatever he wishes, but by the same coin those that disagree with him have to be free to criticise. On a side note would you like to elaborate on what my line of thinking is,as you seem to understand it rather better than I do.AB101 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 20, 2018 8:15 pmOh well, lets see me attacked for my point of view.takeoman wrote: ↑Thu Dec 20, 2018 7:47 pmThe forum moderators have rather more, experience as to what goes on, than you. Re: 7 Reasons Not to Move to Thailand
You have a very abrasive style of posting but take offense when anyone gives you back the same treatment. It's not that you disagree with him, you single him out. If you want to have a go at someone for nonsensical posts, there are many seasoned and held in good regard members who you could pick on, but I guess it's easier to pick on members like explorer who are not part of a "cabal".takeoman wrote: ↑Thu Dec 20, 2018 8:53 pm Are you still smarting over Bingham snapping at you, he does it to everyone, and has been doing for more years than anyone can remember. It's posts like yours that start the "issues" but then again, that is probably what you wanted in the first place.

If that is not baiting, I do not know what is.
Regarding JB, I have no problem with him and can see his subtle sense of humor which is sadly lacking in your posts.
I will however agree that we are all free to post what we like and that must apply to explorer as well.

Re: 7 Reasons Not to Move to Thailand
Yep, including Takeoman. And guess what, you're allowed to disagree with his opinion, as you obviously do, seeing that you and TOG gave him negative karma for saying what he thinks. I'm sure he'll get over that. This is a forum. Everyone is entitled to a point of view or to post articles.
I thought he made some good points. I also agreed with some of the points raised by AB and TOF. But please forget the conspiracy theories. Honestly, there's no "cabal" here. Some posters disagree with your opinions and it works both ways. They are allowed to disagree with you and you don't have to like it, but it's hardly a conspiracy. (Cabal hat-tip )
