Pet peeves, niggles and minor annoyances

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

Pet peeves, niggles and minor annoyances

Post by IraHayes »

I can let most stuff wash over me but when I ask if a person has a PC and they reply... NO, I have a laptop.

Kind of dumb. Most laptops are PCs anyway.

People who don’t respond. It used to be something of a moody kid’s trait, but seems to be a hell of a lot of alleged adults, these days.

The computers you don’t see.

Cloud server farms, where all your stored informations goes to. Netflix, Amazon, etc. Sparc stations which provide all the graphics for games and movies. Chat GPT.

There’s always a trade off with laptops. Portability vs power consumption and heat production. Tricks like shutting down computing cores, reducing processor power, and others. Email and general web surfing doesn’t push the limits usually.

Of course it’s Asinine. All computers are personal computers. Alexa says so and so it must be true. Alexa laughs, Siri laughs, Cortana laughs.

those computers are very rarely "PC's"

A server, mainframe, minicomputer or even a supercomputer is not a PC

The OS a Personal Computer runs is irrelevant... a mac is a Personal computer, a Linux box is also a Personal Computer....

and while we're on it a tablet PC is all tablets including iPads!! No matter what Apple would like you to believe.

I recall that PC was to reference a Windows desktop. The Mac was, well ... a Mac. Tablets are tablets, and mobile phones are, getting more expensive with silly features.

I believe the term PC was somewhat co-opted, and became synonymous with Microsoft based, home computers, even though not strictly correct. But at a time in the home computing evolution, MS probably held a significant share. And this before the PC was small enough to carry with you.
The term almost successfully making itself obsolete if it’s now recognised by many as the big box, big screen, multi component thing otherwise known as a desktop, rather than as Personal Computer. I wonder how many of those who fit this
but when I ask if a person has a PC and they reply... NO, I have a laptop.
Even know what PC means?

iPhone, in some ways could almost do the same with respect to smart phones. I know a few folk who use the term iPhone, but mean their Samsung. A western, English product name that’s been adopted as a term.
