Not sure what "porkies" means but I assume you think I'm full of shit. I grew up in the NE of America. When I got to college most of my friends were Jews for some reason. I hung with Jews for 20 years. I didn't know any Orthodox types, but I even had rich WASPy friends who proclaimed to be "Jewish by race, but not by religion and Mayflower decedent girls that converted Judaism to satisfy their fiance's parents. Obviously one cannot gain Jewish DNA by converting. That's just stupid. Didn't know the 'mother thing though. So you're telling me that if both your grandparents are Jews, your father is a Jew, but your mother is a gentile - you're a gentile ? Doesn't sound right to me. Time for a cocktail. So yes... they can be. A lot of people seem to mistakenly associate ethnicity with "race"... because it's a common indicator. But they're not 100% synonymous in both directions.

If I was born in Argentina, but then spent my childhood and adolescence in Ireland, gaining Irish citizenship, and qualifications from Irish academies, but then chose to follow a Jedi religion, I would consider myself an Irish national of South American ethnicity. Then I find out that my great-grandparents immigrated to Argentina from Germany, making my father Jewish but married my aregintian mother...I'd be a gentile by ethnicity?
