Do Expats really think life in Cambodia is meaningful?

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

True.

Yet have you found meaning in Cambodia? That is the question!

Please do not shy away from the question. I am asking you what it is that makes you wake up with hope to face another day.

I am happy there seems to be no meaning.

What if there would be a meaning, and after a long struggle I would finally find out the meaning of life is bible-recitation combined with collecting Chinese stamps from the late 20's of last century?

One of the best answers I've seen about living in, or putting up with, all the things in any 3rd world country is this: "If it was perfect, I couldn't afford to live here"! I will just try to live where I can be at my happiest.

Isn't it amazing the kind of things peeps do to make their time in Cambodia meaningful.

Well said. How amazing that Buddha found importance of meaning in the meaningless?

Yet nowhere do I state that meaning requires "things", although there is no doubt that humans tend to use things as "tools" in order to achieve things they may find of meaningful merit, to add to their lives experience.

The main point being, what meaning do Expats have for living in Cambodia? What's important for them in Cambodia, or is it simply just a cheap place to bum in? What does Cambodia have that motivates you?

Personally i think it's great for a few months, but live there? Dunno. The place is so messed up i doubt i could attach any seriousness to it.
Life here is as good as anywhere could be so long as the good bits are treated with moderation and the bad bits don't drag you down so much. The hardest thing for me is the shear loneliness. I've got mates and girls are easy to find but there is very little meaningfulness in these relationships. Girls just want money and guys just want to drink.
Doesn't stop it being a uniquely beautiful place though. Even if I've only a couple of bucks in my pocket I can still sit on the riverside and stare at the palace for a while. Tends to lifts my spirits.

I dont know you, what skills you have, or what you enjoy, but you could look for something to get involved in. There are many different things you can do.

Many organizations would appreciate volunteers. You may spend some time at several, and see if there is one where you fit in well.

If you havnt learnt Khmer, you could do that. It should keep you busy for a long time. When you speak Khmer, there will be a thousand more opportunities.

You could talk to students, and see which ones are learning English. Many students like to practice English. You may form genuine friendships with some of the older students and their families, if you want.

You could import electric bicycle conversion kits, install them on bicycles, and sell them.

There are a thousand other things you can do. It gets down to what skills you have, and what you enjoy doing.

You may find more opportunities if you leave PP and travel to other places. Just traveling and exploring new places is fun.

Great advice!

You could. But maybe there is something getting in the way?

As someone that spent their whole life based in the countryside, I always thought that I could never live in the city, especially so far away from the ocean, and whats even more strange is, I never ever wanted to have kids,,, I was always too busy working.
But here I am in Cambodia, now for 15 years, raising 4 girls in a family that aren't even mine and they are not only the reason I find my life meaningful here but they are the reason I find life itself meaningful and happy.

Ain't it strange how your life can change so much but if you put your heart and soul into whatever comes your way, life has a meaning.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Learn Khmer so you can talk English to students!
I’d like to learn Khmer actually.
