Mondulkiri rangers arrest Vietnamese nationals for ‘poaching’
Fri, 17 March 2017

Two Vietnamese men were charged with poaching and placed in pre-trial detention yesterday after allegedly attempting to capture wild bulbul birds in Mondulkiri’s Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary.

On Tuesday, environmental rangers patrolling the sanctuary observed two men in the process of attempting to catch the medium-sized songbirds in Pech Chreada district, said provincial environmental department director Keo Sopheak.

The rangers, Sopheak said, promptly arrested the men and brought them in for questioning at the ranger station at Phnom Prich, where they were identified only as Vankang, 41, and Phoeung, 30.

Rangers confiscated a motorbike, nets, a live bulbul bird and a mobile phone that contained birdsong recordings meant to attract the hunters’ prey, said Sopheak.
“They laid the net and played bird music. Birds hear [the music] and come and they are caught,” said Sopheak, explaining that the men intended to catch bulbuls, which can be sold in Vietnam for high prices.

According to Sopheak, the suspects’ passports indicated they crossed the Vietnamese-Cambodian border 16 times this year.

Good, but then there are plenty of locals poaching as well. Birds like Peafowl have almost gone, Parakeet numbers have hot rock-bottom in just a few years, etc. Too little, too late.

P.S.: Popular Bulbuls (as cage birds) are Red-whiskered (extinct in S. Vietnam because of the cage trade), Stripe-throated, and Black-crested.

Thanks hanno.
Here's what they look like when they're not in a cage.

Was wondering how long it would take to divert a "bird thread". Lol, you got in ahead of Jamie. Guess he's out in the field, studying the habitats of the coastal bird life.

Two wildlife poachers were caught red-handed yesterday with protected birds by WWF officers patrolling with community members and Mondulkiri provincial environment department officials in Sre Pork wildlife sanctuary.

“We were patrolling as usual in the wildlife sanctuary and caught them with 30 white-rumped shamas, one motorbike, two speakers and two small traps,” WWF official Chin Say said.
Keo Sopheak, director of the provincial environment department, said that when questioned the poachers said they trapped the birds for sale.

Same poachers as above.
‘Poachers’ lure birds with song
Keo Sopheak, provincial environmental department director, said two men caught the 30 white-rumped shama songbirds in Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary in Koh Nhek district’s Sre Huy commune. He said rangers arrested them on Tuesday when they were transporting the birds out of the forest on a motorbike.

“They poached the birds and destroyed their nests illegally. They’re facing at least one year in prison,” Sopheak said. The duo, he added, attracted the birds by playing birdsongs on loudspeakers.

The rangers released the birds unharmed, he said.

“They attempted to sell the birds to a broker, who would send them to Vietnam. This kind of bird is very popular there. Each can be sold for up to 50,000 riel [about $12.50],” he said...
