Floating Polluters Told to Move

Kampong Chhnang provincial authorities plan to relocate all battery charging and petrol stations from the area’s floating village to curb water pollution.

Provincial governor Chhour Chan Dern said it had been almost a year since authorities told residents about the relocation of the services. Residents had been given time to find places on dry land to recharge their lead acid batteries used for lighting.

Mr. Chan Dern did not say when authorities will take action to remove the battery charging and petrol stations, but said the relocation was being carried out in accordance with environmental and fishery laws.

“More than 10 battery charging and petrol stations have been floating on the river at Phsar Krom area and are causing biological pollution,” Mr. Chan Dern said. “Acidic waste and oil floating into the river affects not only the thousands of people living at Phsar Krom area, but also affects all the people living along the river at other areas where they still use the river water.”

Governor of Kompong Chhnang City Hai Monorum said that provincial authorities have issued a letter to the owners of floating battery charging and petrol stations, telling them not to operate their businesses on the river any more...
