NBTC to propose special SIM cards for foreign tourists so they can be traced

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

PLAN TO TRACK ALL FOREIGNERS – NOT JUST TOURISTS – BY SIM CARDS MOVES FORWARD

Post by phuketrichard »

wtf?
next step, chip implanted at all borders for those that try and bypass the tracking by not using a sim card or using one owned by a thai .
will be a boost in underground sims

Never mind, got along without a mobile for most of my life anyway :beer3:
BANGKOK — A plan to require all foreigners in Thailand to use a special SIM card that can track their location will be reviewed by authorities Tuesday afternoon.

Announced last week by the national telecom regulator, the plan would require anyone – not just tourists but everyone who doesn’t hold a Thai passport – to use the new SIM card which would enable the authorities to track its owner’s location at any time, said the Secretary General of the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission.

When will people realize that any SIM card can and does track your location. Most operators need to have a court order in order to view and share the information but the information is there at all times.

If I read this correctly, all they are saying is that information can be used at any time without the need of a court order. Seems barbaric but technically speaking, nothing is changing for the SIM itself, just the process behind looking at and sharing the information.

Don't know why anyone gets bothered by these headline grabbing stories, I'm sure some guy in headquarters is going to sit there monitoring my everyday movements. Immigration brought in a crappy 3 page personal information form recently, the most apparently sensitive questions being optional, took me 2 minutes to fill out and will likely sit gathering dust at the back of the immigration office, but you'd think it was a matter of life and death to some foreigners. Never happy unless they're moaning about something to do with the Thais or Thailand.

"The political situation in Thailand has absolutely no effect on foreigners" is a statement that has been seen on internet forums for the past number of years, so there's no need to worry about this.

Expats Could be Exempt From SIM Card Tracking
A government regulator Wednesday played down the certainty of tracking all foreigners by phone SIM cards after the plan was met with concern and ridicule.

Takorn Tantasith, secretary general of the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission said the plan approved Tuesday requiring foreigners use SIM cards which report their locations would not move forward without input from the public – including foreign residents...

Though scant on details just how it would work, Takorn has insisted no privacy would be infringed upon, as he believed the information would only be obtainable with a court warrant. He said it would be an advantage for foreign tourists, as authorities could get help to them faster.

Bangkok is full of surveillance cameras everywhere, face recognition technology et.al. To get away with bombing tourist areas one must be a pro.
