Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia
Paying tribute to Cambodia’s tumultuous history through performance art

Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia is a performance piece that uses dance, film, music and theatre to honour those killed during the country’s turbulent past. Ahead of its showing Paris this month, composer Him Sophy discussed Bangsokol’s cathartic power and his motivation for opening his eponymous music school in Phnom Penh
Tell me about the Bangsokol piece…
It’s about remembering the past of Cambodia. We focus especially on the period of civil war and the genocidal regime, remembering and wishing [that] the dead people – the heroes, the soldiers, the ordinary people, the victims in Cambodia – [find peace] in the next life. This is the first idea. And then the second idea is not only for Cambodian people, [it’s for] people all around the world. Bangsokol means ‘requiem’. And you can see people all around the world now, what they suffer with war [and] living under dictators. A lot of people really see tragedy now… I think that my piece also is a very good message to [those] who want to destroy the world, who want to create war in the world… My weapon is music...

OUR WORK: Bangsokol, A Requiem for Cambodia
https://www.cambodianlivingarts.org/ban ... -cambodia/Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia is a composition featuring music, voice, movement and visuals. It is the first major symphonic work addressing the late 1970s in Cambodia. It is also the first collaboration between filmmaker Rithy PANH and composer HIM Sophy.
The word ‘bangsokol’, references both the white cloth placed over the deceased during a Buddhist funeral and the ritual surrounding the removal of the cloth. It is through this ritual that the spirits of the dead find rest.
Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia is an act of cultural renewal; it aims to return the arts to the heart of Cambodian society. It seeks to become a memorial for peace, honoring all victims of violent conflict.

This Buddhist Life: Him Sophy
A Q&A with Him Sophy, classical musician and composer
By Julia Hirsch Spring 2018
Age: 54
Profession: Classical Musician and Composer
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Your latest work, Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia, draws on the personal and collective trauma of living under the Khmer Rouge regime. How do you deal with the emotional exhaustion from revisiting the past?
When I composed the requiem, I relived the feelings I had during the Khmer Rouge. It was hell on earth, but I still hold these memories closely in my heart and spirit. It is important for the requiem to be shown around the world so everyone can see that tragedy is a shared experience. For me, as a composer, I find hope in creation.
