Labour export from Cambodia on an upswing
With the expected revival of economic activities and China’s decision to ease Covid-19 curbs, many ASEAN and Indo-Pacific states are scrambling to import workers and they are looking at Cambodia.

Several tourism properties in south Pattaya, a major Thai tourist destination, are reportedly seeking new employees and have urged the foreign worker registration bureau to recruit more from Cambodia and Myanmar. Though, the jobs are for waiters and cleaning staff.

As part of the government-to-government (G2G) initiative, Cambodia may send some 3,000 workers this year to work in Israeli agricultural farms, according to the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training. They could be sent under a five-year employment contract.

The format of the G2G system, being discussed for some time, is said to be nearing completion. After the agriculture sector, next year Israel may open the construction sector’s doors to Cambodian workers and employ around 5,000 in the sector.

The Cambodian Labour Ministry is also widening cooperation with South Korea and plans to send through the Overseas Workers Training Programme more seasonal workers, the demand for which arises between March and July every year. There could be a demand for 4,000 labourers to work primarily on farms.

Cambodia has been sending workers to South Korea since the first Employment Permit System, worked out as per a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on November 20, 2006, by Prime Minister HE and Roh Moo-Hyun, former President of South Korea. Since 2010, South Korea has become the second most popular destination for Cambodian workers, says the International Labour Organisation.

update as to Legal cost>
used to be 10,200 Baht for a L-A migrant visa and wp valid for 2 years via an agent
So as a way to entice migrant workers the labor dept, in all its wisdom, has made it so they double their money
Its now 10,200 for a 1 year L-A visa ( which can be obtained IN Thailand now no need t get it in PP) since April last year
i've heard of agents in Cambodia charging 20,000++
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

South Korea:
Migrant Workers Boosting National Economy
AKP Phnom Penh, April 18, 2023 --
While improving their livelihood, Cambodian migrant workers, including those in the Republic of Korea (RoK), have significantly contributed to boosting national economy.

The note was highlighted by H.E. Ith Samheng, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training while presiding over the celebration of Khmer New Year "Moha Sankrata" in Uijeongbu, RoK on April 16.

Cambodian workers have managed to send an average of US$1,000 a month to their families and generate nearly US$600 million annually for the national income, emphasised H.E. Ith Samheng.

The minister was positive that after completing their work mandate in S. Korea, Cambodian workers will get new skills, knowledge, resources and experience for their work back in Cambodia.

Remittances from Cambodian Workers Abroad Estimated at 4.2 percent of GDP Last Year
AKP Phnom Penh, July 02, 2023 --

Cambodia's inflows of remittances from workers abroad were the third-highest in Southeast Asia after the Philippines and Vietnam as share of gross domestic product (GDP) last year, a new report says.

The report — by the ADB Institute, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the International Labour Organisation — estimated remittances to Cambodia grew eight percent from a year earlier to US$1.25 billion in 2022.

That was more than 80 percent of the pre-Covid level of remittances which peaked at US$1.53 billion in 2019. As the pandemic progressed, remittances to Cambodia fell to US$1.27 billion in 2020 and a low of US$1.15 billion in 2021.

At 4.4 percent of GDP in 2022, Cambodia’s remittances were dwarfed by those to the Philippines, estimated at 9.5 percent of the country’s economic output last year. Vietnam was the second-ranked ASEAN country at 4.6 percent. After Cambodia, Indonesia had ASEAN’s fourth-highest remittances at 0.8 percent of GDP.

Released earlier this week, the report — entitled Labour Migration in Asia — cited Ministry of Labour data showing that Thailand had an estimated 1.2 million Cambodian workers in 2021. South Korea had almost 46,000 workers from Cambodia followed by Malaysia with 23,000, Japan with nearly 12,000 and Singapore with about 800.

For studying abroad, the most popular destination was Australia which had 1,900 students from Cambodia in 2000. The United States ranked second with about 800 Cambodian students and Japan was third with about 600.
