An Australian woman has been accused of poisoning her friend with cyanide in a Jakarta coffee shop, which has since become a hot tourist attraction drawing the crowds. Nothing quite like a fatal poisoning to attract restaurant customers ...
By The New York Times
The case of the “coffee murder,” as the local news media calls it, has set off morbid curiosity here in Jakarta and beyond.

And it has brought robust business to Olivier, the restaurant where the young woman died in January. A friend and dining companion is a suspect.

“It’s like a tourist attraction,” said one waitress, speaking in hushed tones because the staff was under orders not to discuss the death.

“Since it happened, business is booming,” another waitress said.

Guests frequently ask to sit in the booth where the woman sat. Some take selfies. The bar once ran out of the iced coffee she drank.

“Everyone wants to taste that drink,” said Mr. Lie, who works at a machinery company here in the capital. “It’s the happening place right now.”

October 7, 2016

Jakarta: Indonesian prosecutors have demanded Australian permanent resident Jessica Kumala Wongso be sentenced to 20 years’ jail for allegedly murdering her friend with cyanide-laced coffee.

The prosecutor's motive seems a bit weak: She killed friend because she advises breaking up with boyfriend.

Indonesian woman tearfully denies murdering friend with poisoned coffee

JAKARTA (AFP) - An Indonesian woman accused of murdering her college friend by slipping cyanide into her coffee broke down in tears on Wednesday (Oct 12) as she took the stand to deny carrying out the crime.

Prosecutors are demanding that Jessica Kumala Wongso, an Australian permanent resident, be jailed for 20 years for the murder of Ms Wayan Mirna Salihin, who collapsed and died after being poisoned at an upmarket Jakarta cafe in January.

The "poison coffee" case has generated huge interest in Indonesia, with crowds packing the court during the trial and TV networks showing it live, and in Australia where the victim and alleged murderer studied together at a design college...

Prosecutors last week recommended the hefty jail term for Wongso, alleging that she decided to kill the victim after Ms Salihin, 27, advised her to break up with her boyfriend as he was using drugs...

An Australian resident has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of murdering her friend with cyanide-laced coffee.

Jessica Kumala Wongso, 28, remained expressionless as three Jakarta judges sentenced her in a case that has dominated the Indonesian press since it began earlier this year.

The judges found on Thursday that she had shown no remorse for killing her 27-year-old friend, Wayan Mirna Salihin, at a Jakarta cafe on 6 January.

“I don’t accept this decision because for me, it’s not fair and very one-sided,” Wongso said after the verdict...
