How Much Damage Can Duterte Do to the U.S.-Philippine Relationship?
How Much Damage Can Duterte Do to the U.S.-Philippine Relationship?
Joshua Kurlantzick Friday, Oct. 7, 2016
Over the past decade, the United States and the Philippines have bolstered what was already a strong strategic and diplomatic relationship with deep historical roots and a 65-year treaty alliance. During the George W. Bush administration, after 9/11, the U.S. launched a training and assistance program for the Philippine armed forces, designed to help combat terrorist networks based in the southern Philippines, especially Abu Sayyaf. For a time, a significant detachment of U.S. Special Forces was based there, training Philippine soldiers.

The US should walk away and tell him to defend is own banana republic. It would save the US tax payers a lot of money. Why do our corrupt politicians keep defending countries who's heads of state hates us. The US gives Egypt over one billion dollars a year in money/aid and we let our veterans sleep in the streets.

Not really, they will just get support from the Chinese. So at the end of the day the US lose a strategic position in Asia.Sailorman wrote:The US should walk away and tell him to defend is own banana republic. US and Spain are historically responsible for the PI banana republic:Sailorman wrote:The US should walk away and tell him to defend is own banana republic. Why give so much money to Egypt ? Who knows, and I'm not even sure that the Americans remember why. In the old days it was to shore up the dictator against the Islamists, and to keep the US arms business turning with the Arabo-Israeli war - give them both both millions to spend on US arms. Win-win.
Nowadays, well who knows ? To prevent a failed state in a strategic place in the ME ? Or just because it's easier to keep giving funds than to stop ? No idea if there is still a strategy there.

Philippine gov't slams French paper for calling Duterte "serial killer president"
Published: 10/10/2016 17:41
MANILA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government branded Sunday as "irresponsible" a report by a French daily calling President Rodrigo Duterte a "serial killer president."
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said while Duterte uses harsh words in his fight against illegal drugs and threatens drug suspects, "in practice, everything has to be done with regularity."
"It's irresponsible the way they have said it and the way they carelessly used these words and their media power to think the Philippines in such a way," he said in a radio interview, reacting to a French newspaper headline "Rodrigo Duterte, the serial killer president."

it will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.
Personally, I think we should tell him, "ok, bye bye.'
BEIJING, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced his "separation" from the United States on Thursday, declaring he had realigned with China as the two agreed to resolve their South China Sea dispute through talks.
