Movies set in Cambodia
Need to find new excuses to have quiet nights in so i'm going on a mission to watch films that have been filmed in the great kingdom
I've seen "the Killing Fields" before, and i think ill watch "City of Ghosts" later,
anyone on here with any recommendations?
got "Same Same but Different" and "the Road to Freedom" on my radar..

As far as Western-made films go, not a whole lot of options. Of course, there are lots of documentaries about the Pol Pot times. I would like to hear our two Cambodian poster's favorite Khmer films of all time.

Surely time for a remake centred around a demolition of GSM.

Not sure if it's covered in the links, but Lara Croft Tomb Raider was partially shot here - or did you mean the plot should revolve around Cambodia?

I thought it was a good movie. The actress is Thai but the story is based on a Cambodian and German.Jamie_Lambo wrote:i had done a bit of googling myself, was interested in some personal recommendations

Re: Movies set in Cambodia
I hated the title for "Same Same but Different", but the movie was actually ok. The plot seems completely implausible but then it turns out it's based on a true story.
Plenty of good movies by Rithy Panh. The Sea Wall is probably the most easily accessible, it was released as "Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique" and is in French but with subtitles.

His 2000 documentary "The Land of Wandering Souls" is magnificent, but I'm not sure where you can get to see it.

Probably the best documentary about the Khmer Rouge is "Enemies of the People."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1568328/
As for movies set in Cambodia that weren't actually filmed here, there is the obvious "Apocalypse Now"' shot in the Philippines, and the absolutely crap "Beyond Borders" starring Angeline Jolie, which was shot in Thailand.

Yeah, I have never heard any Cambodians use that phrase anyway, I thought it was just something you heard in the backpacker ghettos of Thailand.John Bingham wrote:I hated the title for "Same Same but Different", but the movie was actually ok.
