Cambodia Noir - book review

Post by Anchor Moy »

It's just been published - anyone seen it or read it?
CAMBODIA NOIR by Nick Seeley is, in a way, the feel-good book of the year. After you read it, you will feel good about living in a developed country; maintaining sobriety (or the equivalent thereof); and having a safe, boring, predictable job. Seeley, a journalist whose past beats have included Phnom Penh, puts the reader on the street and in the jungle in this powerful debut novel. You will itch, look over your shoulder, and overreact to strange noises one-hundredfold after reading it. Naturally, I couldn’t put it down, even when I should have.

The book reads like a dark collaboration between Graham Greene and Hunter Thompson, with a dash of a coherent Williams Burroughs thrown in...

I’ll be honest. I did not think much of it. Apologies to the author-better than I could produce myself, but that’s it.
Despite what angsta states, it’s clear from reading through his posts that angsta supports the free FreePalestine movement.

By coincidence, I read that last week. Not as good as Moore or Needham, but an OK read.

Sounded interesting so I gave it a read. Some good parts, some totally over the top parts. Worth a look though. One passage Nick Seeley wrote, which rang a bell. He said often Khmer girls will trace magic words and symbols on their lover's skin. My gf (not young khmer, nearly 40) will often do something like that, tracing patterns on my skin with her finger, very lightly. I used to think it was affectionate, now I wonder if its some sort of Cambodian black magic. Anyone else had similar experience?
