Mid-annual report slams Cambodia's tourism sector.
According to the report, the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism is not interacting sufficiently with other ministries or the private sector, nor co-ordinating tourist campaigns with neighbouring countries.
It also addressed the lack of direct international flights to Phnom Penh, the lack of preparedness for the expected boom in Chinese tourists and the lack of high quality tourist attractions outside of Angkor Wat.

Skills Needed in Tourist Sector
As the number of Chinese tourists visiting the Kingdom soared to a quarter million in the first six months this year, Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism Thong Kon said the country’s tourism sector needed to attract more professionals to the industry due to the serious lack of trained tour guides and operators.
Mr. Khon said on Friday that Cambodia still needed more skilled tourism personnel to meet the projected number of seven million tourists visiting the country by 2020. According to the Ministry of Tourism, only 500 Cambodians had completed an Asean course on standards and service in tourism and hospitality, in order to be registered with the Asean secretariat.
“We need to increase our standards, as well as provide a service which is consistent with the current tourism standards in Asean,”said Mr. Khon.
“We still do not have enough professionals in the sector and most tour operators and guides that we have now are not very qualified,” he added.
The tourism minister’s statement comes in the wake of Cambodia Airports releasing data over the weekend that a total of 274,411 Chinese tourists visited the Kingdom during the first half of 2016, 20 percent more than during the same period a year before...

Re: Mid-annual report slams Cambodia's tourism sector.
Actually there are several of what you mention but they are only self promoting due to tourism bureau wanting some $ from said venues. Go figure. Most being start up ventures with little capital. Many are community based & not so much a destination but a jump off point to do all of the above. Chi Phat between SKV & Koh Kong is a nearby prime example. Cleanest Cambodian community I have seen. Koh Kong has a facilitator (Rith Mony) that works closely with several tour operators for a bare minimum hook up fee. A man truly wanting to see his country and this sector develop. There are others. But with no or very little help from gov. entity's that could & should help it makes for a very slow process.bolueeleh wrote:waterfall parks? tonle sap resort + activities? gardens? coral conservation? safari? jungle trek? hiking trails? cultural farm stays?

Southeast Asian countries to share efforts to promote tourism
Mon, 1 August 2016
Cheng Sokhorng
Tourism officials from four Southeast Asian countries met in Yangon on Saturday to discuss ways of working together to promote tourism in the Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) region.
Topics discussed during the two-day “Four Countries, One Destination” conference included increasing cooperation in the tourism sector, promoting regional travel agents, flight connections, human resource development and drawing more investment to the CLMV region, according to Heng Sochamroeurn, deputy cabinet director of the Tourism Ministry.
He also advocated that the countries should strive to adopt a single-visa policy for international arrivals, similar to what ASEAN members enjoy under the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
“A single visa mechanism would encourage international tourists to travel more easily across the four countries and would promote economic growth in the region,” he said...

Now THERE's a good idea. Maybe not so much for tourists, but great for expats. But even so it would encourage tourism around the region.

The idea is for a single-visa for tourists visiting the region, it would have no benefit for expatriates.timmydownawell wrote:Now THERE's a good idea.
