Very strange trial.
Defense argument:
... his client was unaware of the consequences of his actions.
“He did not know that he would be punished for killing someone,”
[2 March 2017]
In the trial’s closing arguments, defense lawyer Mr. Phanith asked the judges to show leniency, assigning blame to the men identified only as Lis and Chak, and saying his client was unaware of the consequences of his actions.
“He did not know that he would be punished for killing someone,” he said. “If a person has clear understanding and with self education, no matter the $3,000…he would not have killed a person.”

Mr. Phanith also identified Mr. Ang as an orphan—despite the defendant’s mother providing a statement confirming that he is her son.

“In his life, he has faced a lot of obstacles. He was an orphan without a clear place to stay. He did not meet people who wanted to help correct him. Instead, he met Uncle Lis and Chak,” he said.

For some, such as Kingsley Abbott, a senior international legal adviser at the International Commission of Jurists who attended the hearing, the trial did nothing by way of exposing the truth of the case.
“The trial was significant not for what was revealed about the investigation, but for the important questions that remained unanswered,” Mr. Abbott said in an email.

“In light of the tremendous public interest in the trial, it is disappointing that by its end it was still not clear whether the issue of the accused’s means to loan money to Kem Ley and purchase a handgun was thoroughly investigated, who introduced the accused to Kem Ley, and what other CCTV footage from Caltex is in the possession of the authorities which was not presented at trial,” he added...

Why has no-one mentioned the fact that Kem Lay wasn't a "Social and Political Analyst"? He was a warmongering firebrand, and knew what that his provocative statements might lead to - war or his death. Free speech is great, but he was deliberately abusing his right to any.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

An interesting reaction to a student video screening. Yet another example of the Streisand effect. As a result, the event has made the news as well as social media discussions.
Reasons cited for the arrests are lack of permission to screen the video, a threat to national security, and
the officials intervened to stop the screening because the Al Jazeera investigation could incite the public to lose faith in the jurisdiction of the court.
Students arrested over Ley film
Police yesterday arrested the president of the Khmer Student Intelligent League Association and three young people who were planning to screen an Al Jazeera investigation into the murder of political analyst Kem Ley.

Officers said they made the arrests because the group failed to seek permission to show the report and the case is still being considered in court.

The young people were arrested at the headquarters of the association in Phnom Penh’s Russey Keo district and then taken for questioning at the Toul Sangker police station.Chek Chetra, the secretary general of the association, said the young people were arrested at about 2pm as they prepared for the screening.

Mr. Chetra said the people were released after more than three hours of questioning. They were required to sign a contract saying they would ask the authorities in advance before screening such videos.

Russey Keo district police chief Teang Chansa said the youth group had been using their freedom inappropriately and failing to follow administrative procedures, so they had to be educated about law enforcement.
He said: “Citizens should follow administrative procedures because the authorities set these rules to serve the people. Please act in accordance with law enforcement and authorities.”

Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan said the officials intervened to stop the screening because the Al Jazeera investigation could incite the public to lose faith in the jurisdiction of the court.
He added the investigation does not reflect the reality of the case and could confuse the public.

“This ban is in response to the law and to prevent rumors that harm national security,” he said.

Kem Ley's suspected killer gets life in prison, but the mystery surrounding the murder remains intact and people will be inclined to draw their own conclusions.
However, it has been announced that the investigation is not closed, and two further suspects are being sought.
In a case widely believed to have been a state-sponsored hit, the more surprising news was that the court has not closed the case, and is still investigating two suspects—one named “Pou Lis,” which sounds like the word for police in Khmer, and a gun-dealer named Chak.

Was it once mentioned that the weapon was a Glock with a 20 shot mag, I am surprised that nothing has been done [ or has it ] to track the serial numbers on the barrel and body of the weapon, from the manufacturers to see if it was sold to a USA company , a weapons dealer , or sold to the military or police in another country. That being Thailand , Cambodia or other. You cannot tell me that no-one has a record of that weapon in their arms register.
It may not mean much or leed anywhere , but it should still be a part of a proper investigation.

In the meantime, they are looking for a suspect called Pou Lis.
Good luck with that.
