Love and Death in Ratanakiri
Tragically, a murder-suicide became just a suicide when a Ratanakiri man shot his lover with a homemade gun that fortunately did not work. Unfortunately, the man had another homemade gun that worked very well when he shot himself with it.

An extramarital affair in Rattanakiri’s Kon Mom district turned tragic on Wednesday when a man attempted to murder his lover – who was also his sister-in law – before turning the gun on himself, according to police.
Deputy district police chief Ren Muth said 35-year-old Cheun Sarin from Tropang Chreh commune attempted to murder his wife’s sister, Son Thou, after their family found out the pair were having an affair.
He said at about 9:30am on Wednesday, Mr. Sarin used a home-made gun to attempt to murder Ms. Thou before using a separate home-made gun on himself.
“Sarin had two guns in his house and nobody knew and when the shooting happened everybody was surprise that Sarin had two guns. Before Sarin shot himself he went to Thou’s house and shot her. Sarin thought that she died,” he said.
“As soon as Sarin took that gun and threw it away in the forest he ran to his house and he shot himself with another gun, immediately dying in his house.”
He said the murder was premeditated after finding a letter that Mr. Sarin wrote in his pocket after he died, saying that the pair would “die together.”
Mr. Muth said citizens in Rattanakiri used home-made guns for hunting game despite police attempting to educate them on the dangers and illegality of doing so.
“People here in the province still follow the culture and tradition like shooting animals in the forest. That’s why a lot of people have home-made guns.”
He said a doctor was sent to treat Ms. Thou, who received minor injuries from the guns
