Phnom Penh Post, The Cambodia Daily and The Khmer Time

Postby prahkeitouj » Sat May 28, 2016 1:03 pm

I read the three English newspapers almost every day online. The three papers seem to be different in some ways when it comes to something about the government and political. I have my own opinions on each paper, but I want to hear yours.

In general, do you think what paper has better content and level of accuracy and authenticity?

C'mon, who's going to come out as a Cambodia Daily supporter ? Anyone ? :stir: Joke, plz.( I'm referring to some implied threats against the CD by officials that I can't find the links to right now.)

For the OP: yes LS, the CD,PPP and KT all have different styles and that's a good thing IMO. If you have time to read them all, then that's great, Otherwise, I skim them all, or when there's an interesting article in the media, I read all three and try to make some sense out of what they say.

FWIW I'd say that CD is known as an anti-govt newspaper, but since I've been in Cambodia the PPP and the KT have become more critical of the government and authorities, but they keep to a less confrontational style in general.
This is all IMO, LS. And I think that the more media choices there are , the better.

KT was originally "pro-government". CD has always been pretty much "anti-government" while in my mind, The Post has usually been the most balanced. It's always good to find out who owns a newspaper (can be complicated). They each have their own merits though.

This thread came to mind when I was looking at the articles on Sihanoukville's sewage problems. The Phnom Penh Post article is much less confrontational than the Khmer Times article, but they are two versions of the same information.

PPP headline: Sihanoukville Authorities Announce Sewage Crackdown
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/s ... -crackdown
KTs headline : Raw Sewage Pumped into Ocean
http://www.khmertimeskh.com/news/25474/ ... nto-ocean/
The PPP article does eventually give the information that sewage is presently going into the ocean, but the article is more nuanced than the KT; following the headline it gives the impression that the authorities are in fact taking care of the situation, and almost as an aside it mentions that sewage continues to go into the sea. The KT article is hard-hitting - sewage is being "pumped" into the ocean, nothing is being done, the authorities deny that there is even a problem, there are allegations of corruption.

Two entirely different styles. Both have their merits as you say. I would have more confidence in information from the PPP, but I like the ballsy style of the KT. If papers were people, I'd say the PPP is a like a middle-aged person - quite reliable but a little dull. The KT is more like a teenager who shoots off at the mouth a bit and doesn't worry about consequences.
