When the Square was first built they had an owner's committee that actually managed to work together to control noise, cleaning, traffic etc. Then it all disintegrated when most of the bars were picked up by generous barangs for their new girlfriends to run as status symbols. No organisation meant the whole place was left to rack and ruin. Sure, the new owner has finally done some tidying up, you can just about go for a pee without getting attacked by rats and shrubs but it's not like they put any more in to cater for the ten extra bars. Rented for 250, sublet for 400, never make any money unless your new boyfriend brings his mates. You can't make money out of $1 beers with a rent of $400 a month, unless you know a lot of heavy drinkers who are willing to forgo the 1000r, or even 2000r a drink. Of course, if some other sucker is paying the bills you can just sit their with your mates playing Rhianna on a loop.

Where are all these new "drinkers " going to come from?
Chinese (nor Japanese or Koreans) do NOT go to open air bars with non Chinese, Families do not go to Open air bars.
and this is where they want Shv to move towards.

Even phuket ( which gets over 6 million tourist/year ) has nothing like this. A HUGE money hole
“The project is expected to be finished within three months before the upcoming high season,” he said, adding that those renting plots would be required to construct two-story buildings for their establishments.
i will go on record, 75% or more will be empty 1 year from now and for sale

Maybe the New Bar Complex is to be a backpacker containment area.

there are a hell of a lot of Chinese/Koreans drinking down the square this season, usually in groups of at least 4-8 guys, most of who work in the casinos or "call centres" they go around peacocking in the bars like they own the place and are quite annoying, and the older Chinese/Korean men that go around the square are very pervy and grabby to the younger girls that work on the square, theyre not all bad though i have met some nice groups of guys too

id say a good 40% at least of the people drinking on the square are Asian men

Surely the bars are built for the Chinese demographic. I would suggest Richard that Cambodia is not the same as Thailand for these people. On a recent trip I saw more Chinese than barangs on Occateul Beach one night and I saw shitloads of Chinese at Denpassar airport.
They are the biggest demographic in NZ and Australia already and the spend the most.

were they tourists?
I am NOT referring to Chinese working there?

Chinese (and Japanese and Koreans) really don't LIKE drinking around expats For one simple reason FACE, they feel they cant let go when non aisans are there
I saw shitloads of Chinese at Denpassar airport.
I agree ( 25% of tourists now in Thailand are Chinese) but we are not talking about that
i am talking about Chinese TOURIST drinking where expats drink

BUT ur 100% wrong about spending the most, Most of their trip is fully paid for back in China ( their hotels, airfares, meals, tours) and once they arrive ( on the Chinese owned airlines) they are taken to Chinese owned shops, eating at Chinese owned restaurants, Driven around on tours on Chinese owned bus, etc etc.

and one thing, when the buy something in these Chinese owned shops they do not pay for it in the local currency, but sign chits which is than deducted from their banks back home

Keep in mind ur talking about 100 new bars./restaurants in one small area in a small beach side town that already, for most likely 7 months of the year, has to many bars an restaurants.
how long is the low season in shv??

There are no more backpackers in SHV

They go SR-PP-Kampot-Koh Rong

SHV is not in the backpacker's travel bible any more
