Nigerians given life sentences
Fri, 26 May 2017
Two Nigerian men were sentenced on Wednesday to life imprisonment and an approximately $10,000 fine for smuggling more than a kilogram of cocaine in one of the men’s stomach.

Y Rin, a spokesman for the municipal court, said yesterday that the sentence for the two men – Okafor Iffeanyi Anthony, 42, and Adibe Paschal, 33 – was based on Article 40 of the Anti-Drug Law.
“Based on the law, the court allows them to appeal the conviction,” Rin said.

The two Nigerians were arrested in May 2016 for allegedly smuggling 1.27 kilograms in their stomachs from Nigeria to Vietnam via Dubai and then to Cambodia, where they were arrested.

Authorities suspected that they were bound for Pattaya in Thailand. Paschal previously denied knowledge of the drugs and had claimed that he had only gotten to know Anthony at the airport, which the latter corroborated...

Great. Now they need to work on proper sentencing for human trafficking, sexual abuse, rape, those types of things.

Two Nigerians found guilty of trafficking cocaine to Cambodia in 2016 have appealed their life sentences before the Supreme Court on the grounds that this was the first time they have committed a crime in Cambodia. Verdict awaited.

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the sentencing of two convicted Nigerian drug traffickers who were sentenced to life in prison by the lower court for transporting more than one kilogramme of cocaine from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Cambodia in 2016.

The two Nigerian nationals were identified as Okafor Ifeanyi Anthony, 42, and Adibe Paschal, 41.

“Based on the two convicts’ appeal on July 12 as well as their confessions and the evidence presented in this case, the Supreme Court has found the convicts guilty as charged,” Presiding Judge Kim Sathavy said.

Judge Sathavy said that the two convicts were charged with “drug trafficking and transport” under Article 40 of Cambodian Law on Drugs Control.

The Nigerians had travelled from the UAE to Phnom Penh on May 9, 2016, and upon arrival immigration police X-rayed the two and found drugs inside their abdomens.

After Cambodian authorities detected the drugs the two were arrested by police.

The suspects were taken to the Anti-Drug Police Department where police made the two men eat and drink laxatives to speed up the removal of the drugs from their bodies.

Police retrieved 70 big capsules of cocaine with a total weight of 1039.1 grammes from the suspects.

During their appeal, the two convicts admitted committing the offence but said that they were not the drug traffickers or the owners of the drugs.

They claimed that they just were only working for money and were hired by an unidentified Nigerian man living in the UAE to bring the drugs to Cambodia and would be paid $80,000.

They asked the Supreme Court to reduce their sentence as this was their first crime in Cambodia.
