Expatriates in South East Asia Make More Money Than Expats in Any Other Region of the World

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

"Expatriates in Southeast Asia are the highest paid globally and report greater levels of disposable income, according to a new survey from HSBC.

The average annual salary for expats -- or those living outside their home country -- in Asia Pacific was $126,000, compared with a global average of $104,000, the survey found. The survey was conducted by YouGov and questioned nearly 22,000 expats from 198 countries.

Expats in Asia also largely said they had more disposable income and could save more since moving to the region, with nearly 70 percent in some countries, such as China and Vietnam, agreeing, the survey found. The global averages were 57 percent who said they had greater levels of disposable income and 52 percent who said they were able to save more, the survey said.

That sounds about right. Most expats in Phnom Penh are making $126,000 per annum.

So now it makes more sense to stop complaining about the pineapple's price.

Sorry didn't read the full article.

I still would say that is on the high side. Not by much but definitely high as an average.

If this is even a little true the sterotype of SEA expats as GSM dwelling, price-of-pineapple-obsessed TEFLers and other good blokes cannot be accurate. Are there hoards of millionaire expats hiding somewhere who balance out all of the the $15,000/yr TEFLers for an $126,000 expat average? Or does HSBC just not count the TEFLers, or what? I s possible the stereotype is inaacurate?

wow; wonder who they questioned?
an expat working at an international school hired out of country averages about $2,600-3,500 / month ( 10 months)+ housing allowance and flight home
I know a few expats working for international companies and they make an average of $75,000/+ Heath, housing, flights but still nowhere near the amounts their stating.

US ambassadors make $120,000-180,000?++
