False Rape Accusations by locals.

This is the part of the forum where we discuss Cambodia's nightlife! While most bars, nightclubs, pubs, beer gardens, and hostess bars are in Phnom Penh, we discuss the Cambodian nightlife across all of Cambodia, including Siem Reap, Kampot, and Sihanoukville. The main nightlife areas in Phnom Penh are on Street 136, Street 130, Street 110 and Street 51, but there are other party spots that aren't girlie bars where expats, tourists, and locals drink until the sun comes up. Feel free to post specials and promotions that relate to nighttime fun!

Suffice to say, you're unlikely to encounter it, but every scam in the world has been pulled at least once in Cambodia.
Sure, but in this case, both the guys mentioned as victims were running a hostess bar - so not your average joe.

Of course this "can" happen to anyone,(who puts themselves in a difficult situation), but it's not limited to Cambodia. And frankly, without calling anyone a weird parano, this scenario is among the least likely bad shit situations that most people will come across. Too much work. Much more likely to get robbed without all the tra-la-la. :beer1:

if that is a ref to my post then the person i'm talking about didn't run a girly bar. Just a normal pub with normal staff. Although, Normal in SNVL can mean quite a lot of bad things. He was unlucky in that business. The staff from the previous owner extorted him with the aid of police for a month's severance pay under the old employer as soon as he had moved in. She didn't even work for him. A quite prevalent Cambodian logic. Don't care, you pay. Pay now. Pay now or there will be trouble...

Ok, correction, both guys were running bars. But my point was that this is unlikely to happen to a random tourist/visitor to Cambodia.

Yeah, I haven't heard of it too much, but then I keep myself to myself. It is odd that with my limited take on all the local gossip I met someone who it was happening to. I think it must be more prevalent or I was just lucky. Much more likely to get jumped on a local beach by some horny local. Heard quite a few stories like that.

I have never heard of this happening in Cambodia, but..... in the Intercontinental Hotel I once ran into a young attractive well-dressed girl who tried to pick me up. She was traveling with a man who was a "family member." She was just here on vacation. Wanted to have a good time. Was oh so friendly. .... I could smell the scam from miles away, but that's because I had been there before ......

I ran into a similar situation with a girl in Bali some years ago and I did go with her and her "driver." It all seemed very innocent and why not go with a pretty girl and see what might happen. I soon found myself in a house with her... she disappeared, and her "family member" wanted me to play cards, he had a patter about how fortunate it was I happened to meet him because his company was going to open a casino here soon and they needed some foreigners like me to play at the tables to help bring in more customers blah blah, and he wanted me to play cards with him, not for money, just so he could show me how it would all work... blah blah.... he was going to write down the score as we played.... I could glean that the scam was, he would write down the "imaginary" score of our "practice game" .... and then suddenly claim that I owed him that money.... and when I said, "No, you said this was just practice..." he would tell me to pay up or else, and friends would start coming out of the woodwork... I realized I was in real danger and had done something very very foolish by coming there.... I acted extremely stupid as if I had no idea what was up and I thought they were the nicest people in the world and then I found every possible stupid-guy excuse to not play cards with him..... apparently they finally decided I was so stupid I was not worth the effort, and I was able to get away.... the girl had of course markedly lost interest in me, on my way out.... I think I was very lucky to finally get out of there unscathed.... they claimed to be Singaporean and I think they were, their English was much better and different than the locals.... the card guy and the driver were both big guys, I could not have outfought them.

I have never done anything that foolish since.

Whether it's a card scam or a rape scam or some other kind of scam..... if you are a single man, you can be a target -- I think this is very rare in Cambodia, but all the same, if you're traveling in Southern Asia and a pretty girl comes onto you and it seems too good to be true, it probably is.... eyes wide open..

Another one:-

Flew into BKK and over-nighted in an airport hotel waiting for my flight to PP the next day. Sat in the restaurant on my own when a white guy and a cute Thai girl sat down two tables from me. After a few minutes they start having a row and she storms off. A few minutes more and the guy comes over and asks if he can sit with me saying 'You probably just saw me having a row with my wife'. I say OK and after 10 minutes of idle chit-chat he tells me the argument was about him wanting to drink rather than go and shag her. A few minutes more and she reappears and comes and sits next to me. Then the guy says I can take her to my room and shag her for free 'cause he just wants to get pissed. She agrees and is really keen. Not sure what the set-up was about but if it is too good to be true....... Probably going to drug and rob me or maybe mid-coitus a knock on the door and the husband is there with a fake policeman.

So what exactly have any of these anecdotes about Bali/Bangkok etc got to do with here? Pretty much nothing.
