Make Sure To Read This Before Traveling To Cambodia

There is no denying the fact that Cambodia is a third-world country that has a ways to go with social and political development.
Approximately 20% of the country’s citizens live below the poverty line, and the government system is extremely corrupt. Despite these misfortunes, it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been, and it’s home to some of the nicest and happiest people I’ve ever met.
Families and individuals living in Cambodia simply lack sufficient resources to meet their daily needs. The country has a long history of violence and conflict that have negatively contributed to high levels of crime, and any progress in infrastructure development. Pollution in populated provinces impedes progress in health reform, and makes it easier for individuals to contract and spread diseases throughout the country.
More than 80% of the Cambodian population lives in rural areas of the country. These citizens are the least likely to attain access to health, education, and employment due to poorly constructed infrastructure, and lack of funding from the government. Their main form of employment is inevitably in the agricultural sector. Most farmers practice agricultural methods with traditional systems that are very low in productivity. Many rural households also endure seasonal food shortages each year that prevent them from being able to provide for their families.
It can be difficult to travel to Cambodia from Western countries if you aren’t prepared for the living conditions and often dangerous surroundings. The country is definitely in a much more developing stage than other countries in Southeast Asia. There are many countries in Asia that see tourism as a legitimate industry, such as Thailand. However, in Cambodia, tourists are often perceived as a way to make money by other means. The poverty level unfortunately has a direct and significant impact on the level of crime. It is clear that a lot of residents see tourists as a way of making money by overcharging them, or often robbing them.
