Footballer in drug sting

A Nigerian footballer has denied selling a package of crystal methamphetamine to an undercover police officer.
Olisanwandu Echezona Samuel, 34, appeared in Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Wednesday charged with drug trafficking.

Presiding judge Thlang Phaneth said Mr Samuel picked up a package of drugs from Sorya Mall in Phnom Penh’s Phsar Thmey II and gave it to an undercover agent who had ordered drugs from a group of Nigerian traffickers hiding out in the city.
“He was arrested after he offered the package of drugs to undercover police,” Ms Phaneth said.
“Police seized a black plastic package of crystal methamphetamine powder weighing 44.16 grams, a phone and a motorbike from him.”

During his trial yesterday, Mr Samuel denied the allegations...

In criminal law, entrapment is a practice whereby a law enforcement agent induces a person to commit a criminal offence that the person would have otherwise been unlikely to commit. It "is the conception and planning of an offence by an officer, and his procurement of its commission by one who would not have perpetrated it except for the trickery, persuasion or fraud of the officer." It is a conduct that is generally discouraged and thus, in many jurisdictions, is a possible defence against criminal liability. Depending on the law in the jurisdiction, the prosecution may be required to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was not entrapped or the defendant may be required to prove that they were entrapped as an affirmative defence.

In law enforcement, a sting operation is a deceptive operation designed to catch a person committing a crime. A typical sting will have a law enforcement officer or cooperative member of the public play a role as criminal partner or potential victim and go along with a suspect's actions to gather evidence of the suspect's wrongdoing. Even mass media journalists resort to sting operations to record video and broadcast to expose criminal activity. Sting operations are common in many countries, such as the United States, but are not permitted in some countries, such as Sweden.

The defendant should NOT have pleaded that he did not know what was inside the package. He should have claimed that he only started looking into the world of drug trafficking opportunities because the undercover police officer was so persuasive in convincing him to do so, and was willing to help him starting a brand new career in drug pushing. With that argument, and if the prosecution fails to prove that the defendant had done any of this before, the defendant might have gone scot-free!
