Police chief 'unaware' of shooting suspect
22 March 2017 Kandal Province.
-Major Kong said the incident took place after local residents alerted officers to illegal fishing in Preah Puth commune on Friday night.
The deputy police chief led a group of officers to check the scene.
“As we were approaching the scene, we saw two men riding a motorcycle,” he said. “We were suspicious so stopped them for a search.
“During the check, we found a small package of drugs. One of the suspects fled, so I fired my gun into the air as a warning shot to stop him.”
Local media accused Maj. Kong of keeping quiet about his involvement in the shooting.
A local news website posted what it said were pictures of the victim’s right shoulder.
The bullet hit the man on the front of his shoulder and exited through the back, it said.
But Maj. Kong told Khmer Times he believes he is being targeted by individuals involved in drug abuse and trafficking in the region.
“I wasn’t aware of anyone being injured at the time,” he said.
