Vietnam News & Discussion

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

*Went to Vung Tau and came back to earth, with meals running 70K or thereabouts and beers 10K to 25K, and at Red Parrot, buy one, get one free, even prime liquors. Woohoo"

Good to hear and info like this suggests a real need for a Vietnam forum.

Sure, restaurants in HCMC are expensive but then the rent for places like the L'Usine on Dong Khoi must run to to 5 digits.

No doubt about it. Restaurants pay huge rent there. I've read what those chain coffee shops are paying in rent in D1, around 2.5 million dong per sq metre.

FWIW - article on Vietnam scams.
Some of these are common in Cambodia, but others are not.

Ten scams tourists face in Vietnam
Most countries in SE Asia find ways of scamming western tourists. In most cases these experiences are more insulting than they dangerous.
Sometimes they are cheeky although there are situations that could claim your entire travel budget, not to mention a brush with the law...

I would say most, if not all, of these scams are present in the KoW as well. Not defending Vietnam here, just a fact. And he forgot a few (in both countries): Flipper card game scammers, NJH (OK, only in Cambodia), taxis at the airport.

Well, I read the piece finally. I've never had any of these "scams" tried on me. One exception was the hotel booking price thing way back in 2007 or so. After seeing the inflated room rate, I pulled up my confirmation from the hotel and paid the corrected bill. Otherwise, I don't think I have ever paid more than fair price -- as far as I know. One hilarious incident was a Saigon riverside cafe asking 50,000 for a bottle of water. LOL. Which is what I did and walked to a Circle K to get the same thing for 4500.
