Angkor Wat: significant price increases from today.

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Pretty much everything you state here is wrong. I am sure the vast majority of gap-year travelers will continue to visit Angkor Wat, thanks to Daddy's credit card. Not everyone is as skint as you obviously are. I'd wager that the increased fees will have zero impact on the number of visitors; if you have just spent a few Grand on your trip, USD 62.00 for a three-day ticket is not going to make much of a difference.
If a bar double its beers from 2 dollars a pop to 3.8 dollars a pop would it affect clientelle?
A senseless comparison. We are talking about Angkor Wat here which, compared to many other must-see sights is still pretty cheap. Twenty Dollars a day is chickenfeed, as is a beer for a USD 3.80 (my favorite IPA at the Black Swan in Bangkok is USD 9.00).
OK so if it doesn't t put off young poor shoe string travelers then it's gonna put off expats who live in SR.
How often do you suppose the average expat in SR, not employed in the travel sector, is visiting the temples each year?
Now a lot less.

I know expatiates that have been here and have never visited Angkor Wat so I do not foresee a huge impact.

Let's face it phrammoianchor/pineapple/bktrapper: you are the only one with such an unhealthy obsession with money. Or rather the lack of it.

Many poor younger people will skip Siem reap for Otres, Kampot and the islands, many already could not afford the 20 dollar ticket after been scammed in Poipet by dodgy Bus operators , overpriced Visas, fake Immigration on the Thai side and currency conversion rip offs.
total BS; Angkor wat is ANGKOR WAT and even if they raised it double again people would still go visit.
Overpriced visa? Fake immigration on thai side??? wtf u talking about

In Arranyaprathet, Thailand there is fake Immigration posts 1 or 2 kms before the border selling visas for higher prices than at the official Thai/Khmer border.
Another tip is if you pay the Visa on the official check Point you need to pay in USD not THB they will rip you off on the conversion if you pay in THB.

Factual information, You cannot beat it Phuket.

Well I got an email from a (retired) couple who are on the way back to here for their annual trip. They've been round the temples before and although meeting family in SR before coming to the beach they are NOT going round the temples with them simply because of the price increase....so that's 2 tickets not sold...

I just met another couple backpackers and they too skipped the temples for SNV, The islands must be getting packed soon, I bet accommodation goes right up down there.

People that skip Angkor Wat for Shitsville should stay home anyway.

Minister: Price not a problem for Angkor visitors
Sum Manet, 06 February 2017
Just days into the increase of ticket prices for the Angkor Archeological Park, the Tourism Minister lauded the move saying that the doubling in cost had no impact on visitors. Tourism Minister Thong Khon said yesterday that just four days into the price hike, 10,093 tickets had been sold, amounting to a revenue of $496,621.

“The revised ticket prices to visit Angkor does not seem to have affected the mood of visitors. Angkor remains the most famous tourist destination in the world and in the region,” he said but stopped short of comparing sales figures from the same period last year.

“Moreover, if there is a check on the type of ticket that guests have purchased, we can also evaluate exactly whether the diversification strategy to get tourists to stay longer in Siem Reap province has also been successful.” ...
