Facebook Plea Saves Women Trafficked to Japan for Sex
by Chhorn Phearun and Ben Paviour | January 18, 2017

Seven Cambodian women who were allegedly lured to work at a restaurant on Japan’s Honshu Island and forced into sex work were rescued after sending a Facebook message to the Cambodian Embassy there, officials said on Tuesday.

The women were lured to the restaurant with promises of high wages by a Japanese restaurant owner who helped arrange visas and airfares for the women, according to the statement. When they arrived in April, however, the women said they were denied payment and forced into sex work.

Authorities were alerted to their plight late last month when one of the women contacted the Cambodian Embassy in Japan through its Facebook page in early to mid-December, said Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry.

Embassy staff then contacted Japanese authorities in Gunma prefecture, who brought “all of the seven women from the restaurant to the embassy,” he said.

The embassy has since filed a complaint with the Japanese authorities to open a criminal investigation into the case and secure unpaid wages and compensation for the women, he added.

Japan police make arrests in Cambodian trafficking case
January 23, 2017 14:59
TOKYO - Japanese police said Monday they have arrested three people in a sex trafficking case involving Cambodian women and discovered 10 Thai women who may also be victims of the same prostitution ring.

Two Japanese men and a Thai woman were taken into custody after allegedly forcing the seven Cambodians, aged from 20 to 36, into prostitution. The group was rescued from a restaurant in Gunma northwest of Tokyo last month after a victim made a desperate Facebook plea.

Police raided the restaurant and suspects' homes, where they found another 10 women from Thailand aged from 21 to 34. Several of the women were detained for visa violations, a police spokesman said in the first announcement of the arrest of the trio. "But once they are determined to be victims of human trafficking, they'll be released," he told AFP.

Japan has long been a destination for Southeast Asian women seeking higher wages who often find themselves forced into sex work or indentured labour.

The Cambodian women were lured to work at the restaurant in November with the promise of high wages by a Japanese owner who arranged visas and airfares for them, according to the Cambodian foreign ministry. The victims told police they had been promised salaries of $3,000 a month but were instead forced into sex work.

This, darkies with flat faces are not so much en vogue in Japan, and to a lesser extent Korea.

Alleged Traffickers Worked at ‘Cosplay’ Japanese Bar in Phnom Penh
February 8, 2017

A Japanese bar manager and two Cambodians faced formal charges on Tuesday for allegedly tricking a group of local women into forced sex labor in Japan.
Susumu Fukui, the 52-year-old manager of Cosplay Bar Pirate in Phnom Penh, Lim Leakna, his 28-year-old wife, and Seng Chandy, a 34-year-old employee of the bar, were charged with unlawful recruitment for exploitation at Phnom Penh Municipal Court and could face prison time of between seven and 15 years.

Mr. Fukui’s “cosplay” bar—a contraction of “costume play”—on the backpacker strip of Street 172 was shuttered on Tuesday and its signs plastered over with newspaper.
The building’s 52-year-old owner Eam Heng said he could not recall the names of the Japanese man and his Cambodian wife, who he said had rented his ground floor for the last four years, but said they were good tenants.
“There were never any prostitutes here,” Mr. Heng said. “They just sold rice and food, and alcohol as well.”

The six-table venue seemed hastily abandoned and was still stocked with menus, liquor and dishes hanging in a small kitchen. A laminated sign courted customers in Japanese with promises that “cute Cambodian girls will welcome you in English and Japanese.”

The bar’s Facebook page shows photographs of a half-dozen or so young Cambodian women wearing close-cropped kimonos, dresses and nurse outfits at the bar. Some of the photos crop out the women’s faces, focusing on their chests or legs...

UPDATE
Japan court orders payment of wages to 7 Cambodians, nixes damages for forced prostitution
February 15, 2023 (Mainichi Japan)

MAEBASHI -- A court here ordered three individuals on Feb. 10 to pay seven Cambodian women about 170,000 yen ($1,300) per person in unpaid wages, but dismissed the plaintiffs' claim for damages over forced prostitution.

The seven women sought payment of about 8.9 million yen ($67,000) from the three people who had forced them to work, claiming that they were coerced into prostitution without pay.

According to a written complaint, the seven came to Japan in November 2016 after being told by a former gang leader and others that they could earn $3,000 to $5,000 per month working as waitresses in Japan. They verbally signed employment contracts for $2,000 per month and worked at the Ikaho hot spring resort in the city of Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture, and other locations. They claimed that they were forced to engage in prostitution and were not paid wages.

The Maebashi District Court ruled that "it is reasonable to recognize that an employment contract was concluded," and ordered the defendants to pay a total of approximately 1.21 million yen ($9,100) in unpaid wages.

On the other hand, Presiding Judge Junichi Sugiyama rejected the plaintiffs' claim for damages, stating that they "may have been aware that their work in Japan included prostitution and similar acts, and it is not enough to recognize that they were forced to engage in prostitution."

Many Cambodians have light skin, and Koreans and Japanese have very flat faces.
