Florida man extradited to Phuket on kidnapping and extortion charges.

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

US man extradited to Phuket
3 Dec 2016 at 17:04

An American man accused of kidnapping a wealthy countryman in Phuket in 2013 is in police custody on the resort island after being extradited from the US to Thailand on Friday.

Shawn Abraham Shaw, 43, is accused of a series of crimes against Antonio Accornero, a millionaire who splits his time between Las Vegas and Phuket and is said to be well connected with senior Thai officials.

Mr Shaw has denied the charges. At his extradition hearing in Florida, he maintained that Mr Accornero made a complaint to Thai authorities after a business deal between the two went sour.

The complaint was not made until 40 days after the alleged crime, Mr Shaw's lawyers have said.

Mr Shaw arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok on Saturday morning and was escorted to the Kamala district police station in Phuket.

He is being held on the basis of an arrest warrant issued on Feb 13, 2014 in connection with the alleged kidnapping for ransom of Mr Accornero two months earlier.

Mr Accornero also has accused Mr Shaw of taking cash and assets worth as much as US$2 million from him. If convicted of the most serious kidnapping charge, Mr Shaw could face life in prison in Thailand...

" if convicted he could face life imprisonment"

if Antonio Accornero with his senior Thai official friends have been able to get this far by bringing him back to Thailand I don't think he will be going back.
this is the scary side of Thailand and why it's best to keep a low profile.

Do US officials get involved in any way in foreign court procedures either before (and after) extraditing someone to a country with a poor judicial system? I'm guessing the Thai authorities have to provide ample evidence and then he gets sent over? So basically pretty much guilty in the eyes of the US authorities who reviewed the case?
