Arrest Following Mob Murder

A suspect was arrested on Friday after the mob killing of ethnic-Vietnamese motorbike taxi driver Le Yainghong after an argument in Phnom Penh at about 1:30am Friday morning, with police still seeking two more suspects.

According to Seng Rithy, a penal police officer in the Phnom Penh Major Crimes Unit, 32-year-old unemployed Theam Sivkuong was arrested for the premeditated murder of 29-year-old Mr. Yainghong.

A police officer in Meanchey district, who declined to give his name, told Khmer Times that Mr. Yainghong had been walking alone through Chak Angre Leu commune when an argument started between the victim and the suspects.

“The victim was beaten many times with [pieces of] wood on the head and also stabbed many times with knives on his chest and stomach, causing him to die at the scene,” he said, adding that a crowd had witnessed the events.

“After the mob killed the victim, the suspects managed to escape before police could arrive,” he said, adding that Mr. Sivkuong would be sent to the municipal court for questioning today.
