Government halts transport of timber from Lower Sesan II dam

- The government has temporarily halted transport of timber and forest products from Lower Sesan II dam in Stung Treng province’s Sesan district until after the elections in July.

The Council of Ministers issued a letter to the Ministry of Environment on 27 February, saying that the government agreed to temporarily suspend the transport of timber and forest byproducts from Lower Sesan II dam reservoir until after the elections in July.
Bun Uy, secretary of state with the Council of Ministers, said that after suggestions from the Ministry of Environment, the government has agreed to suspend it.

“Those areas are the state’s economic land concessions, now the government halts temporarily the clearing and transport of forest products from Sesan dam and it will make a new decision after the national election,” he said.

Three companies are involved in the dam: Cambodian’s Royal Group which owns 39 percent, China’s Hydrolancang International Energy has a 51 percent stake and Vietnam’s EVN International owns 10 percent.

Construction of the dam is scheduled to be completed in 2019 at a total estimated cost of $816 million.
