My family and I took a trip to Thailand through rtr tours or whatever. It was just my family, American khmers, and a French Khmer family. Our tour guide got drunk every night and was late every morning and slept through most of the day. He was entertaining when he was up.

i wonder if they count the migrant workers ( to Thailand and Malaysia) as tourist?
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

It's quite cheap to go to Vietnam or Thailand, so I doubt they include those figures. 700 000 would account for just the migrants. Around 40% of the Khmer I have regular contact with have been to either Vietnam or Thailand, so it's no exactly exceptional anymore.

Cambodians take to the skies, new Asia routes opening soon
22 March 2018
Chinese passenger arrivals via the three international airports are the main trend providing steady growth, a senior officer at Cambodia Airports says, but Cambodians flying abroad are following the Chinese pattern.

Eric Delobel, CEO of Cambodia Airports, said Cambodian passengers had become the main factor in the steady growth of the three airports.

As of 2017, Chinese passengers represented about 25 percent of total passengers, a 60 percent increase compared with 2016. This was an amazing increase in Chinese passengers, Mr Delobel said. He added that more than a million Cambodian passengers travelled in 2017, representing the second-top nationality of our airports’ passengers.

“That means a trend of Cambodian people travelling abroad through three airports. That is something that is growing a lot. And it provides the country with diversification of traffic.”

The main challenge for the airport and for tourism in Cambodia was to target diversification, he said.

“Asean is what we are targeting today. By having diversified traffic, you will have sustainable development. We are targeting working with all airlines to better connect Cambodia with all the countries in Asean,” he said.

Higher incomes prompting more Cambodians to travel
August 16, 2018
The number of outbound Cambodian travellers has increased by 14.5 during the first half of the year due to higher incomes in the country and a more crowded aviation market, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Tourism.

During the first six months of the year, more than 960,000 Cambodians travelled abroad, a substantial hike that the ministry said follows an increase in living standards in the country as well as an expanding offer of destinations from the rapidly growing number of airlines operating in the country.

Many Cambodians travelled to other countries during the first half of the year in search of medical treatment, for business, or because they were vacationing, the ministry said.

Ms Sivlin said that despite the huge number of flights connecting the Kingdom to destinations in China, Cambodians’ favourite destinations are still inside the region. She said Thailand and Singapore remain at the top of the list for most Cambodians, who want to visit these countries because they are relatively near and offer many opportunities for shopping, medical treatment and cultural experiences.
