Four Cambodian fishermen taken hostage by Somali pirates four and a half years ago touched down at Nairobi airport yesterday evening after being freed by their captors on Saturday morning.

Their ordeal began in March 2012, when fishing vessel Naham 3 was hijacked in open water south of the Seychelles, according to the head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) Global Maritime Crime Programme, Alan Cole, who is based in Kenya...

'We had to eat rats,' say sailors held by Somali pirates for four years
Arnel Balbero told the BBC the group were forced to eat anything they could get their hands on, including rats, and were given tiny amounts of water. “Eat anything, even you not like, you feel hungry, you eat it,” he said. “You eat rat, you cook it.”

One crew member died when FV Naham 3, a Taiwan-owned fishing vessel, was seized in March 2012 south of the Seychelles.

The remaining crew – from Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia, Indonesia, China and the Philippines – were held by the pirates until being freed on Saturday. The pirate representative Bile Hussein said a $1.5m (£1.2m) ransom was paid for the sailors’ release. The claim could not be independently verified...

MOGADISHU, Somalia, Oct. 23 (UPI) — Twenty-six hostages taken nearly five years ago by Somali pirates have been freed, officials said.

The release came about after negotiations with the Hostage Support Partners, a mediation organization, CNN reported.

Of the 29 crew members seized along with their boat in 2012, one died during the hijacking and two succumbed to illness during captivity. The hostages were men from Indonesia, China, the Philippines and Cambodia. They were on board the vessel Neham 3, which sailed under an Omani flag, when they were captured...

Crew Tells of Four Years at Pirates’ Mercy

by Hannah Hawkins and Khuon Narim | October 25, 2016

It was about 1 a.m. when the pirates stormed the ship. First they killed the Taiwanese captain and tied up the crew. Then came the demands: millions of U.S. dollars in exchange for the lives of the captives—most of whom were from impoverished families and developing countries.

They said “if we did not give them the money, they would kill us all,” said 34-year-old Hem Phumany, who was among four Cambodian crewmembers aboard the FV Naham 3 when it was hijacked by Somali pirates about 100 km south of the Seychelles in March 2012.

Tue, 25 October 2016
Kong Meta, Jack Davies and Joey Chua Xue Ting

One of the four Cambodian fishermen released by Somali pirates on Saturday described yesterday their terrifying four and a half years in captivity, which he said “killed us emotionally”.

Kampong Chhnang province native Em Phoum Many, 34, was kidnapped in March 2012 along with 28 of his fellow sailors when pirates hijacked the Taiwanese-owned fishing vessel Naham 3 in open waters south of the Seychelles.

Four Cambodian fishermen who were held hostage for five years by Somali pirates will arrive back in the Kingdom on Sunday only a week after they were released, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said yesterday.

Mr. Sounry told reporters that all four Cambodians will make their way to the Philippines today before being flown back to Cambodia on Sunday.

“His Excellency Senior Minister [Prak Sokhonn] has instructed the Cambodian ambassador to the Philippines that he has to go down to pick them up at Manila Airport and do whatever it takes to repatriate them to Cambodia as soon as possible,” he said.

“As planned, they will arrive home on October 30.”...

Cristina Maza and Niem Chheng

Four Cambodians who were held hostage by Somali pirates for four years arrived home yesterday evening after being released from captivity two weeks ago.

Two of the men are from Kampong Chhnang province, while the other two are from Kampong Cham and Kampong Speu.

The men’s return was facilitated by the NGO Caritas Cambodia, which will also help with their reintegration. “We are thinking about rehabilitation measures for them,” said Tith Sopheak, migration and anti-human trafficking program manager at Caritas...

Captive Fishermen Return After Four Years in Somalia

by Khuon Narim | October 31, 2016

Four Cambodians who were among a crew of more than 20 that was taken captive by Somali pirates in 2012 returned to Phnom Penh on Sunday via Manila, about a week after being released.

“I am so happy,” one of the men said at Phnom Penh International Airport as the group was whisked into a waiting mini-van and driven away shortly after arriving at about 7:30 p.m.
