9 Vietnamese sentenced to death for drug trafficking
Published: 21/09/2016 16:49
HANOI, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) — The People's Court in Vietnam's northern Bac Ninh province on Wednesday sentenced a local drug lord called Trang A Tang and his eight accomplices to death for drug trafficking.
After four days of trial, Tang, born in 1982 in northern Son La province, was sentenced to death due to trafficking 1,791 cakes of heroine and 51.5 gram of methamphetamine.
In addition, his eight partners in crime faced death penalties while three other defendants faced life sentence.
According to the indictment, Tang headed a ring trafficking narcotics from Laos to Vietnam's northern Son La and Bac Giang provinces for consumption, reported the state-run news agency VNA.
The indictment said from 2009 to 2013 when Tang was arrested, he had carried out 13 illegal drug trafficking activities, pocketing some 608,500 U.S. dollars.

Re: 9 Vietnamese sentenced to death for drug trafficking.
Background on the case: the trial was more than a year ago, but the sentence has just been announced. Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore are more well-known for executing drug traffickers, but trafficking more than 100g of heroin is also punishable by the death penalty in Vietnam.

VN's largest drug trial gets underway
The first day of a four-day trial on a drug case that shocked the nation is underway.
Tang and his wife.
The 33-year-old drug lord, Trang A Tang, and 11 of his accomplices are standing trial for the largest heroin case the country has ever seen.
On July 26, 2013, the police seized 265 bars, or 92.8kg, of heroin and more than 500 methamphetamine pills carefully hidden inside two cars belonging to Tang and his spouse, Giang Thi Sua. The couple refused to stop at a police checkpoint, spurring a car chase before they were arrested in Bac Giang.
Further investigation by the police revealed this case was the largest drug operation ever recorded by the country. Tang was allegedly the head of an international drug-trafficking network.
Tang and his accomplices allegedly bought heroin from Laos and Thailand and stored it at his father's house in Moc Chau, northern Son La Province.
Tang's network reportedly smuggled nearly 1,800 bars, or 630kg, of heroin into the country from 2009 until the date of his arrest. He sold the heroin to other drug-distribution networks.
The police said a large number of people were involved in Tang's network, and most of them were his immediate family and relatives. The police are currently tracking down those who managed to flee and go into hiding.
