Poor kid

I do wonder how far out into the sea these people are going, to get themselves into such difficulties ?

Can they not swim & just going too far out ?

I have walked along the beach between Snooky & Otres 2 20 to 30 times in the last 3 years, and just can't understand it

Korean Father, Son Latest to Drown in Sihanoukville Waters

BY KHY SOVUTHY | AUGUST 27, 2016

A South Korean man and his 4-year-old son drowned off the coast of Sihanoukville’s O’Tres beach on Friday despite a pledge by police this week to drastically increase beach patrols in Preah Sihanouk province after a spate of similar incidents.

The accidents mark a total of six drownings in the province since August 10, all but one of them foreigners. It is the first accident to occur after officials said they had deployed 140 police officers across five beaches along the coast, which has recently been hit by high winds.

Friday’s trouble began a little after 9 a.m., when South Korean Lee Min Seock, 40, who was staying at a local hotel with his wife, floated a small raft out to sea with his son, Lee Seungjae, according to Luy Hang, police chief of Sihanoukville’s Buon commune.

As Lee Min Seock swam in the ocean, his son gradually drifted away—ending up 30 meters from the beach—and panicked.

I am here where the Koreans died yesterday, I was in the water briefly at Occateul. The waves were big and it was very dangerous.
What actually happened was the man collapsed and fell tipping the five year old out if his plastic boat. Hard to believe but the father died of a heart attack. He was standing beside the boat when he collapsed and knocked the kid out of the boat.
A staff member was trying to revive the father and he cried help me as he died. I don't think a man who has drowned would be speaking.

Saving by prayer. Don't knock it, it could be more efficient than sending out non-swimming life-guards.

If they trained those monks in life-saving skills, they could actually be doing something useful

Sihanoukville officials may have been reading this thread:

Preah Sihanouk province to recruit beach lifeguards

Mon, 29 August 2016
Khouth Sophak Chakrya

Preah Sihanouk provincial authorities plan to recruit about 30 lifeguards to help prevent drownings across the province’s seven beaches.

The move comes in the wake of several tourist drownings; the latest casualties involved a South Korean 40-year-old father, Lee Minseock, and his 4-year-old son, Lee Seungjae, who drowned at Otres Beach on Friday morning, said Brak Visal, Preah Sihanouk provincial administration deputy director.

Ten local and foreign tourists drowned during the first eight months of this year while visiting beaches and islands in the province, Visal said.

“Two years ago, our province had 10 lifeguards, but five left to work for the private sector,” he said.

Currently, only one of the seven beaches, Ochheutal Beach, has lifeguards.
