Thailand bombs: Hua Hin resort hit by twin blasts

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Possibly but may also be Kumpulan Mujahidin Malaysia,? supposedly defunct for the last two years but who knows. I worked in this region 25 years ago and it was pretty tense at times then.

Beheadings, bombings, drive-by shootings, assassinations, extra-judicial killings and vicious assaults have left more than 6300 people dead and at least 11,500 injured since 2004 in south-east Asia's longest-running war in Thailand's four southernmost provinces.

Armed and organised ethnic Malays – almost all of whom are Muslims – are pitted against the predominantly Buddhist Thai state in a cycle of violence that is rarely reported outside of Thailand. Old report 2015 http://www.smh.com.au/world/the-war-in- ... ha6aa.html

I am not surprised and have been wondering when they would start to hit the tourist resorts ( although NOT targeting tourist --8 am in Patong)
PLUS it was the queen's birthday so a huge slap in the face for the goverment and monarchy

Frank, they have set off bombs in Hat yai which is a HUGE tourist area for Malays

MY money is NOT on red shirts but separatists hitting against the goverment. The changes from Chumpon south in the past 2-3 years is amazing. Not usually spoken about but many locals are starting to get worried about the growth in the moslem community here.

It's hard to understand why the separatists have not bombed tourist areas previously. The war in the south just goes on, hugely expensive for everyone. Doesn't every new regime pretend that they have a solution?
Making Thailand a federation and giving the regions a voice would help but that is obviously never going to happen. I wonder how it would have worked out if the Thais had been able to retain the big slice of Cambodia that they were forced to return post WW2.
I guess the Viets would have grabbed the rump that was left and poor Cambodians would have had healthcare and schools. It would have been a pretty fractious border for the duration of the Vietnam war.
I remember being in Bangkok when the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia and the Thai were shitting themselves. A barang journo said at the time that the only thing to stop Vietnamese tanks would be Bangkok's traffic.

thats why in the 80's-90's the Thai's and US backed and allowed the KR to set up camps in Thailand.....to stop the viets moving west.
In 1988 I lived abut 2 kms from the border in Bo Rai ( up above Chantaburi) often saw trucks of KR driving thru town and we used the kr as guides.

I think the main reason the separatists have NOT hit at tourist areas so far is for now they dont want the western media condemning what they are trying to do, keep it local
