Re: The best thing in Vietnam !!!
I found female companionship highly enjoyable. They were equally as attractive and feminine as Khmer women. Plus they were better educated and more interesting to talk to. Unfortunately I wasn't attracted to marriage and have never been able to master a tonal language.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

I'm with Hanno. I've lived in a western Mekong town, spent months in Hanoi, Saigon and Vung Tau. I thoroughly enjoy my time with Vietnamese people, more so than with any other SEA nationality. It's nice to mix with people who are conscious (I do mean the sense of being awake), curious, sharp and spirited. I'm moving back to VN in the spring.

Re: The best thing in Vietnam !!!
I went a few times. Found the people to be hard faced, way less easy going than here for sure.
At the time, starting as a tourist from HCM, everything was set up so it wasn't easy to step out from the tourist traps.
In the end I only found any sense of serenity when I reached kampuchea krom villages and was treated like a distinguished guest for visiting them and being able to communicate in khmer.
VN food is way better than anything remotely cambodian though.

You probably would have had the same experience in Vietnam if you spoke their language. In any case I had a great time speaking only English.

I was only there a couple for a couple of short visits with my family, but liked it a lot. The people aren't as overly friendly as here, but beyond that are fine.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

They get stuff done. Entirely different work ethic. Higher quality of goods on average. Very clean in comparison to Cambo. They have some of that stuff called infrastructure. Weird!
Like JB mentioned not as friendly at surface but least effort & they open up.
Think I'll go again soon now that that stupid 1 yr.only visa for US zits is over & done. For now.

I find Vietnamese very easy to engage with and they are always ready for a beer and a laugh.sigmoid wrote:How so? For example,...?hanno wrote:Having lived there on and off for 21 years, I can assure you that you are wrong. They don't really understand fun, relaxation and indulging in pleasure
And Vietnamese food is heaps better than anything Cambodia has to offer.

I agree with your praise of Vietnamese food. I find that their advantage is that of a greater variety of dishes. And that I feel is due to their geography and extended coastline. Their geography gives rise to many climate zones which permits the cultivation of fruits and vegetables which is not possible in Cambodia. Cambodian signature dishes are excellent but fewer in number alas.

This. The cuisine is very varied in Vietnam, unlike Cambodia, and a lot of the dishes are a lot more palatable to Westerners.taabarang wrote:"And Vietnamese food is heaps better than anything Cambodia has to offer."
