Breaking: Electronic devices forbidden on certain US-bound flights

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

There has been a surprise announcement that starting from today 21 March 2017, flights to the US from certain countries will not allow any electronic devices larger than a cellphone in cabin carry-on luggage. These devices include ipads, kindles, laptops and cameras larger than cellphone size. Two of the countries concerned by these restrictions are Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
More information on this later.

US forbids any device larger than cellphone on airlines from 13 countries

New TSA requirement blocks passengers from bringing laptops, iPads, Kindles and cameras, with a lack of specifics on whether flight crews are included in rule.

US authorities have secretly required airlines from 13 nations to forbid passengers from carrying any electronic or electrical device larger than a cellphone.

The new edict was distributed in an email described as “confidential” from the US transportation safety administration (TSA) on Monday.
The requirement forbids passengers from bringing laptops, iPads, Kindles and even cameras larger than mobile phones into the cabin. All such devices must be checked.

Saudi Arabia’s Saudia Airlines and Royal Jordanian airlines are among the affected countries; the full list has not been revealed to the affected airlines themselves...

Note that restrictions are similar, but not the same for passengers flying to the US and to the UK, so you will need to check your airline if you are transiting through an airport in the ME region.
UK bans laptops and tablets on flights from six Middle East countries
The UK government has announced a sweeping cabin ban on laptops and tablets on inbound flights from six countries, following a similar move by the US on Monday.

The UK ban on any electronic item larger than a normal smartphone applies to all direct passenger flights from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

Six UK airlines – British Airways, EasyJet, Jet2, Monarch, Thomas Cook and Thomson – and eight foreign carriers are affected.

Though the restrictions, effective immediately, will not apply to flights where UK travellers change planes in European airports, it is likely other European countries are considering similar restrictions...

Passengers boarding flights to the UK from the countries affected will not be allowed to take any phones, laptops or tablets larger than a normal smartphone – specified as 16cm x 9.3cm x 1.5cm (6.2in x 3.6in x 0.5in).

Any such devices will need to be placed in hold luggage. The restrictions have no time limit and will apply until further notice, a Downing Street spokesman said.

No restrictions will apply to larger smartphones, including the iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which are under the size restriction. However, many reading devices, including Kindles, are too large and will not be allowed in cabin baggage.

Electronics Ban Means Unfriendly Skies For Many Travelers
Checking expensive equipment and devices holding sensitive information could be a huge problem.
21/03/2017

A new U.S. policy banning certain electronic devices in the cabin on flights coming from parts of the Middle East and North Africa has already put potential travelers on the fence.

The ban ― which mandates that devices larger than a cellphone be checked ― affects passengers on direct flights to the U.S. from 10 airports in Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Nine airlines are listed: Egypt Air, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Kuwait Airways, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, Saudia and Turkish Airlines.

Some who would otherwise have no problem working on long flights or securing their valuables via carry-on are now subject to alarming security and safety concerns.

With roughly 50 flights per day affected by the new rules, thousands of people per week can expect to change the way they fly, sometimes dramatically.

Their questions, as of Tuesday afternoon, have gone unanswered:

What happened to the federal government’s lithium battery warnings?

The Federal Aviation Administration wants to be sure nothing explodes ― inadvertently or otherwise ― on a flight. Small fires and explosions do happen, however, and at least some FAA guidelines try to steer anything that could catch fire into the cabin where it can be managed.

That includes lithium ion batteries. If they’re spare batteries and not already inserted in a device, the general rule is that they have to stay in the cabin. The same rule goes for e-cigarettes. The Transportation Security Administration’s new ban reportedly supersedes those warnings, making it unclear exactly what you should and should not stow in the plane’s hold...
