Young Date Palm Trees a-growing

Post by mammothboy2 »

Over 300 young date palms are sprouting and growing out of their party cups.

[This represents a success rate of approximately 15%, measured against the number of date stones brought from Arabia.
Considering that the effort involved was, inevitably, closer to potting-shed standard rather than laboratory standard, 15% was
about what was anticipated. ]

Those interested in purchasing some, please declare an interest soon.

NOTE: These trees will take 20+ years to attain maturity and there is no probability that any will produce fruit humans would wish to eat;
as in Taiwan and Japan, these trees will be ornamentals, not productive fruit trees.

Good luck with this OP.

Isn't Salak a type of palm fruit?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salak ?

That grows and produces fruit in Cambodia.

Yes, I've seen SALAK in the fruit market, but it doesn't seem to be a really popular item.

Infuriatingly, it is NOT in Michael Jensen's Trees and Fruits of Southeast Asia (Orchid Guides, Bangkok.)

Interesting, I talked with my Khmer wife about this fruit and she has seen it for sale at the market. She said the Khmer word is plaie ankam, but it does not grow where we live.

GROWING SALAK

http://tropics.nu/salak-the-snake-skin-fruit/

A bag was bought and a trial will be made starting this week.

PUZZLING NEWS: Two growing date palms and three growing mangoes have burst out of the SIDES of their party cups,
ignoring clear orders to grow vertically.

A few mangoes - planted one to each party cup - are pushing up two trees-to-be and one is pushing up three trees-to-be

I planted the top of a pineapple I bought at the supermarket, with the aim of growing my own pineapple just for the novelty. Two years later all I have is a very large pineapple top growing in a pot. I'm giving it to a friend to nurture with strict instructions to send me pics if it ever fruits.

PINEAPPLES

there is a pageful of contributions on YOUTUBE about pineapples. I suspect they are grown as a houseplant; if one is in
the depths of winter in Scotland or Minnesota,
having something tropical to look at is good for one;s morale

My morale would be better if it had a bloody pineapple growing on the top! Anyway I will have lots of tropical things to look at in a couple of weeks.
