Why do so many people "jump" in Thailand ?

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Why do so many people "jump" in Thailand ?

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Yet another tragic case has been reported of a foreigner jumping to his death in Thailand. RIP.

Other recent reports from Thailand include people who have jumped from multi-story carparks, shopping malls, condos, hotels, and also the airport.
And presumably, it is not only foreigners :
There were so many in 2013 that Airports of Thailand announced it would spend 30 million baht to erect glass barriers to deter jumpers.
Is this a specifically "Thai thing", or is it happening elsewhere, but is not reported ?

Irishman ‘critically wounded’ in BKK airport plunge passes away
March 30, 2017
An Irish tourist was critically injured Thursday morning after falling from the fourth floor at Suvarnabhumi Airport, police said, describing the plunge as intentional. An updated report from a radio has confirmed that he has sadly passed away.

The 32-year-old man took an escalator to the fourth floor of the airport’s departure hall before jumping over the railing onto the ground below, according to Monthian Baothong, chief of the airport police station. The incident reportedly took place at 6:35am.

The airport has been the scene of many suicides since it opened in 2006.

Brit commits suicide, jumping from seventh floor of Bangkok hotel restaurant
6 June 2017
A 67 year old British man has committed suicide after ordering a final drink from the bar of a Sukhumvit hotel restaurant before jumping from the balcony last night.

The shocking part was the coolness he showed, not attracting any attention to himself what so ever. He causally walked to the balcony, set up a chair, climbed up and jumped, before anyone had time to react.

Witnesses said Mr B. had casually ordered a drink at the restaurant on the seventh floor of the hotel in Klong Toei Nua, Wattana district.
Then he had quietly gone round the corner out of sight and put his chair by the railing...

A Chinese tourist in Phuket who goes swimming is living almost as dangerously as a European expat in Pattaya with a balcony condo. The Chinese are only slightly better at swimming than the Europeans are at flying.
You could be next.
