Thailand has a new king

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Thailand has a new king

Post by phuketrichard »

guess they made an "arrangement" wonder when Mr T will return?
The new king, with a less intense interest in state affairs and a reputation as a playboy, does not command the same level of respect as Bhumibol. He has gone through divorces with three women who have borne him seven children, and in recent years has spent much of his time residing in Germany. Although most Thais are devoted to the royal institution, it is hard to gauge how they feel privately about Vajiralongkorn because of harsh laws that mandate a prison term of three to 15 years for anyone found guilty of insulting the monarchy.

Yes, that didn't take long. Here's the story from an actual new source:

Thai activist arrested for Facebook share about new king
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/A/ ... 3-06-17-10
The arrest was apparently the first under the country's tough lese majeste law since King Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun took the throne on Thursday
It's just going to get worse from here. It's kind of like that story of the Emperor's New Clothes.

Many of my work colleagues live in Thailand...

From what I've heard of the new King's intention to resume much of the farming land as Royal Crown land, which affects 30% of the population, it's making civil war look quite possible.

that is astonishing if true and would be like pouring oil on the fire.
Is it based on just speculation or was this mentioned in the media somewhere?
I can't believe for one minute that kind of thing would be done to raise market rents on the land and maybe its a way of just protecting farmland from falling into the interests of avaricious land developers and to keep it for rural use.

I'll try to find out more.
All I know is from the colleagues I work with in the West Australian mining industry who have lived there long enough to not have any other place they call home.
It's clearly a discussion emanating from the farming communities, through the wives, to my colleagues and I've heard it from several directions.
I too, hope it's not true. But given the government's recent history of how they have treated the farmers in, for one, respect of payments for crops, nothing would surprise me. (And yes I realise government and crown are separate matters).
