(RIP) King Bhumibol Adulyadej - Rama IX (5 December 1927 - 13 October 2016)

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Thailand to monitor social media 24/7 in mourning of King’s death

Thailand’s state communication board has asked internet service providers to set up 24/7 monitoring centres to search for “inappropriate content” across all social media platforms including Youtube, Facebook, Line and Twitter.

On 14 October 2016, Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBCT), said that the commission has sent an order to all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Thailand.

The order asked ISPs to monitor “inappropriate content” on their channels and remove it as soon as possible. The order also asked web-administrators of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Line to comply with the regulation.

Any ISPs that fail comply with the order will be prosecuted.

“If any internet service provider does not comply with the order, which is a breach of the law, they will be seriously prosecuted by the NBCT,” said Takorn.

The NBCT order also urged ISPs to establish 24/7 centres for online monitoring. Centres will screen for so-called “inappropriate content” and report it to the NBCT or Technology Crime Suppression Division for further prosecution.

This order is a part of Thailand’s month-long mourning of King Bhumibol’s death.

'Common Sense'

II. Of Monarchy and Hereditary Succession
In the second section Paine considers monarchy first from a biblical perspective, then from a historical perspective. He begins by arguing that all men are equal at creation and, therefore, the distinction between kings and subjects is a false one. Paine then examines some of the problems that kings and monarchies have caused in the past and concludes:
In England a king hath little more to do than to make war and give away places; which in plain terms, is to impoverish the nation and set it together by the ears. A pretty business indeed for a man to be allowed eight hundred thousand sterling a year for, and worshipped into the bargain! Of more worth is one honest man to society and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived.
— Thomas Paine[19]
In this section, Paine also attacks one type of "mixed state" – the constitutional monarchy promoted by John Locke in which the powers of government are separated between a Parliament or Congress that makes the laws, and a monarch who executes them. The constitutional monarchy, according to Locke, would limit the powers of the king sufficiently to ensure that the realm would remain lawful rather than easily becoming tyrannical. According to Paine, however, such limits are insufficient. In the mixed state, power will tend to concentrate into the hands of the monarch, permitting him eventually to transcend any limitations placed upon him. Paine questions why the supporters of the mixed state, since they concede that the power of the monarch is dangerous, wish to include a monarch in their scheme of government in the first place.

Thai police disperse mob stirred by alleged king insult

https://www.yahoo.com/news/thai-police- ... 09298.html
PHUKET, Thailand (AP) — Police and soldiers on the Thai resort island of Phuket dispersed a mob of several hundred people seeking a confrontation with a man they believed insulted the country's king, who died this week.

Video shot Friday evening shows the crowd blocking the road outside a soy milk shop and waving placards with slurs such as "buffalo," a local slang word for stupidity. Some shouted for the man to come out.

One man in the rowdy crowd yelled, "If you don't love the king, who else would you love in this land?" as others argued with officers blocking the entrance to the shop.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej's death Thursday after 70 years on the throne has sparked a national outpouring of grief.

Police and a community leader wielding a megaphone dispersed the crowd by leading them to a local police station to lay a complaint.

Thai media reported that the crowd's anger stemmed from online comments that were made by the man long before the king's death.

Thailand has draconian lese majeste laws that impose stiff prison sentences for actions or writings regarded as derogatory toward the monarch or his family.

Phuket police commander Theerapol Thipcharoen said the public "came out to express their love for the king and weren't happy for anyone to disrespect him."

"But they were not violent and they knew it would be inappropriate, especially in the circumstance," he said.

Whatever happens eventually in Thailand, in the short-term there will be SEA tourists who will probably cut short their time in Thailand to spend more of their trip in Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos etc. because of the no-fun factor.

Otherwise, there will also be tourists who will go elsewhere on the globe because SEA sounds like a drag. Thailand is the most important tourist destination in SEA, so of course that will affect us all if a lot of tourists stop going to Thailand.

Short-term, i think Cambodia will gain, but maybe not after that. We'll see.

Here's another:

Thailand: Mob demands realized as woman arrested for royal slur

The woman, who has not been named, was accused of posting a derogatory statement on Facebook on Friday, according to Thewes Pleumsud of Bo Pud police in the southeastern island of Koh Samui.

http://indianexpress.com/article/world/ ... r-3086141/

An angry mob descended on Bo Pud police station on Sunday demanding the woman be charged. The crowd hurled insults at the woman, according to videos widely shared on Facebook. Police said she was charged and then publicly prostrated herself in apology before a portrait of the king, who died on Thursday aged 88 – prompting a wave of grief across the nation.

Two other similar cases since the king’s death – in which angry crowds urged punishment for alleged royal defamation on social media – have raised fears of mob action.
