23 Year Old American Woman Falls from Cliff trying to Escape Rapist in Krabi, Thailand

KRABI – A 23 year-old American woman was was badly injured in a 45-metre fall fall from a cliff at Ao Nang in Krabi after try to ecape a sexual attack from a 28 year old Thai Man.

Pol Lt Songpol Bunchai, a duty officer at the Ao Nang police station said the attacker of 23 year old Hannnah Michel Gavios tried molesting her twice, once at the top of the cliff and again after she fell onto the rocks below.

The second time, she bit his ear and he fled. He then called 191 to alert authorities that a tourist needed to be rescued.

Miss Gavios then endured a night of pain, trapped between rocks near the sea with a suspected broken back, before rescuers found her on Friday morning, according to the Bangkok Post.

Mr. Apai Ruengvorn, 28, of Wang Wiset district in Trang, was arrested on Friday after admitting that he became aroused and tried to molest the woman.

No charge have been filed as of yet, as police are waiting to question the victim,” Col Piyapong told the Phuket News.
Hannah woman was taken to a clinic in tambon Ao Nang before being transferred to Krabi Hospital.

Doctors report she suffered a broken lower back and nerve damage requiring urgent surgery, she was transferred to Bangkok Hospital Phuket where she underwent surgery Friday night.

Doctors reportedly said the surgery went well but the woman still reported numbness in her legs.

Authorities notified the US Embassy, which contacted the hospital and arranged for the victim to be transferred to Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok. Her current condition is not known.

This is exactly what I mean by "the de-evolution of Thailand": a Thai man molesting a foreign tourist after she fell onto the rocks and broke her back. He's so completely unaware (due to brain damage or lack of any education whatsoever?) that he's done anything wrong, he calls the authorities to report it.

Then, "after admitting that he became aroused and tried to molest the woman", "no charge have been filed as of yet, as police are waiting to question the victim". I guess they weren't informed that she's in the hospital up in Bangkok. She probably has to come back and report in person in the proper "sub-district", where it occurred.

By the end of the year, if not sooner, we'll be reading about roving gangs of thugs breaking into guesthouses and hotels and going on rampages like something out of A Clockwork Orange while the police sit around watching TV.

Is there something about this tale which would strike Sherlock Holmes as being somewhat implausible?

I suppose you mean how he got down the cliff? By a less vertical route, I would guess. Or, is there something else that I am missing?

You can read it like that. Or, you can believe that the would-be rapist had a spark of humanity in him and saved his victim's life by calling for help. Maybe he freaked out because he thought he'd killed her ?
But the fact that the guy tried to rape his victim after her fall is beyond disgusting. I hope she bit off a large chunk of his ear and he is now marked for life as the man who tried to rape a (semi)paralysed woman after he nearly killed her.

Horrid and perverse as this may sound, but he did have some (tiny bit of) humanity in him and went for help, fortunately for the woman.
Good wishes for her recovery. She is very lucky to be alive.
