Cambodian/ Thai border at Koh Kong and Hat Lek

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Cambodian/ Thai border at Koh Kong and Hat Lek

Post by obelisks »

Does anyone here have any very recent experience of successfully crossing the Cambodian/ Thai border at Koh Kong and Hat Lek and being issued a Visa exemption to Thailand?
I only wanted to stay in Thailand for about 2-3 weeks before i go to Indonesia and I have a G7 country passport so before the recent suspension of all visa exemptions on the Thailand Cambodian border I was entitled to 30 days.
I actually wanted to spend about 6 to 7 days on Koh Chang and leaving via Hat Lek–Koh Kong would be perfect for my travel plans but I will not be going there if I have to fly to Bangkok and then travel down to Trat.

because the dilemma is in order to get that Thai Visa in PP at the time of my application I need to show an air ticket showing my flight details into Thailand according to what I've read elsewhere?
I'm hoping when I leave Bangkok if I ask one of the senior immigration officers about the current status of that border whether they will know the current situation.

if the immigration officers at Bangkok airport say the border is still closed for non-Visa holders yes I will try an agent without submitting an air ticket. Thanks!

Surely somebody on this forum has or knows someone that has recently crossed from Cambodia to Thailand by land border? A hell of a lot of expats arrive into BKK from their own countries and return the same way. I go either through koh Kong or O'Smach once or twice a year. I would also like to know any updates on this visa on arrival issue.
If you have onward travel details/flights you could get a Transit visa which should be cheaper than $40 or $50. But why pay that and the hassle of visiting the embassy if we can find they are still doing free VOA!?

i am driving up next month and crossing at Hat lek.

PS was just told ( yesterday) by an agent ( Mottha in Shv) that a air ticket out of Thailand is not required as there land borders.

O'smach and Hat lek were not borders that in-outs / visa exempt were stopped,
only Pailin and Poipet were

There is NO VOA for most people ( westerners) it is a Visa EXEMPT

PS; there is a new visa in the pipe works ( although in Europe they have already stated issuing them) :thumb:
its a 6 month multi entry visa valid for 2 month stays at a a time

cost is 5,000 baht.
it is supposed to be in SE asia Nov 13th ( cross my fingers as gf needs that)

G7 members get 30 days

So Ron, you not from one of those G& countries? Or have the Thai's changed the goalposts again and only give 15 days (visa exempt stamp as Richard rightly states) to all now ??
Even if its 15 days, it still saves you the $ and trouble of obtaining a Thai visa! :thumb:
