The Notorious One retiring?

Post by kiwiincambodia »

So Connor McGregor tweeted this over night and the world of MMA is in shock.

I have decided to retire young.
Thanks for the cheese.
Catch ya's later.

After that Dana White has pulled him from UFC 200 saying it was because Conner refused to attend pre shown press conference in Las Vegas due to training commitments.

Is this all a ploy by Conner to force the UFC to bow down or is more going on?

dont blame him tbh, hes made his millions why not retire early, he was riding a wave that crashed in his last fight, a part of his game has been taken away, but he made a lot of money on the way, and as long as hes not stupid with his money hes set up for life, only greedy people need more money than they can spend
its a tough demanding sport, some stay in it too long, its good that hes able to walk away early, he got big really quick due to the hype, hes made his cheddar now he can do less demanding things, open his own gyms etc

You really feel he crashed after the last fight?

I think he is at the peak of his career and earning potential, it seems silly to chuck it in so quickly. However i do get your point about some fighters staying in longer than necessary, but i fully believe Conner has a few more years and a few more top class fights left in him before he even has to consider throwing in the towel.

Yeah he is at his peak, but he was riding the hype train, and that was a big loss for him, which brought the train to a stop, and he looked no where near his full potential at that weight, i think the rematch wasnt necessary maybe taking someone on at the weight below would be a better option, hes probably just taking a break, and will come back once the hype train picks back up again, "the big return of the notorious conor mcgregor" is a bigger ticket seller than "lets see conor fight someone lighter seeing as he couldnt take on the big boys"
he could fight anyone on a "coming out of retirement fight" and it would sell tickets, add a bit of drama and it will be a huge pay day, while his coming back from a big loss fight wouldnt have no where near as much hype as its just a "lets see if he can come back from that loss he just suffered" fight

its boxing politics and tactics the hype has already started from the retirement tweet and Dana "pulling him off" the next show, the drama has already started, the hype train has left the station he will probably fight at the end of the year/early next year, taking a year out is no big deal at the top level, all the top fighters have 6-12 month between fights...

This did actually cross my mind when i read he was ''retiring'' hence the questions mark in the thread title.

Either way I think this is more about his ego than anything...... It will be interesting to see what happens over the coming days / weeks.

Yeah you are right, but Lesner is still around so thought it was more relevant and Shamrock is mentioned in the article.
