spend the $$ for a decent one, plenty of shops in PP sell good ones
get one with front suspension

you get what you pay for
my bike ( a Scott) was purchased in 1998 for $1,200 on sale.
been to Nepal, Tibet and around other places as well an still rides fine

i ride 6 kms or so everyday and love it, gets u outside and the heart pumping
It is such too expensive to me and I can't understand functions of it. BTW I do agree that bike with suspension is good. I think I saw this in the forum, but I couldn't find it again.

I don't know why I kept buying them because I kept breaking stuff, but anyway, after switching to a Louis Garneau (forgot the model), I never broke anything else. I even shipped it to L.A. where it got stolen a few months later :(

Whatever you do though, don't buy the "Japanese" mountain bikes. They say Japan, but they're all from China (sold in Japan) with the cheapest components possible and give riders more hassle than their worth.

For ease of use and for budget friendliness (about $75), I would get a 3 speed little used Japanese bicycle. There are models with a front hub dynamo (google, I'm lazy to explain), go for those. The little generators that flip down on the wheel always tend to explode their bulbs. Also, a step thru bicycle (again google) would be more ideal for ladies because of their enclosed chains and low frames.
Yes, thank you. I've checked Google and trying to understand it. :-)
